They’ve got some more: Sony NEX-VG30, NEX-6 & RX1

September 12th, 2012 Jump to Comment Section

Sony just announced 2 new cameras. No wait, they just release another 3. It’s getting hard to keep track, let’s look at it slowly:

After the Sony A99 full frame DSLR, and the NEX-VG900 full frame large sensor camera, Sony went on to release the NEX-VG30 that is the direct successor to the NEX-VG20 (released last year).

VG30:
– same form factor as VG900
– comes bundled with a 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 lens (with zoomrocker!)
– has an APS-C sized sensor (half the size of the VG900)
– a little more affordable
– similar audio
– similar framrates & 24p with cinematic gamma
– same nice viewfinder

It looks like the VG30’s main difference to the new VG900 is really just the smaller sensor.

Additionally Sony just announced the Alpha NEX-6, successor to the NEX-5. It has an APS-C sized sensor and does full frame 60pHD movies. It also does 24p and records to AVCHD like all the others. Surely another interesting camera to check.

The last one camera we see today is the Sony DSC-RX1, a full frame point & shoot camera, meaning that it has a built in lens, on top of a full frame 35mm sensor. That is pretty interesting as it’s basically a 5D kind of camera in an ultra compact format with a nice Zeiss lens on top. It does full HD and it looks like it does that at 24p only (?). No 60p there.

Here are the prices for the different camera bodies:

The NEX-VG30 (body only) is $1798
