DSLR RIG REVIEW

We tried the Vocas matte box with the DvTec rig and unfortunately we discovered, that this rig setup wouldn’t comply with the standard height of 85mm optical center to rails. The camera sits a little too high. It is possible to remove a plate that sits between the quick release and rod support, but one would need an additional dedicated part to change that height. It’s not a simple do-it-yourself fix.
We notified Danny about this problem and he solved it. Danny says:
“(We) will mail you photos of the new version with adjustable height. This is now standard.”

Wow, we like his cooperative attitude. This guy is there for his customers. Anyway, this is the picture he sent us and what we realize, is that this design will probably not allow much space underneath the camera, as it’s not possible to slide it forward as on the quick release design.

In spite of the mentioned compatibility issues, the rig has some more positive things to offer.
First, it sits very comfortably on the shoulders.
Second, the handles are articulated and give a very good and comfortable point of stability.

When testing balance, we realized that the rig tends to lean to the left side where all the weight of the camera sits. The balance on this rig could be improved by adding weight at the right point behind the shoulder mount. Weights will make the rig less front heavy. You can order weights on Danny’s homepage, but most likely they will not affect the lean-to-left issue since their point of attachment is very far on the left, as you can see.

The weight attachment is also a mounting point for other things, like a v-mount battery or other stuff you might want to carry on your rig. This mount is equipped with two Velcro straps.
