Artgrid - New Footage Licensing Site by Artlist

Artgrid is new footage licensing site created by the people behind Artlist. It will offer unlimited downloads of footage in up to 8K resolution on a subscription-based model just like Artlist. The site will feature story-driven clip organization and is set to launch in spring 2019.

Artlist is a subscription-based music licensing platform. I assume most filmmakers have already heard of it or used it. In less than two years after the official full version launch (link to our our article) Artlist got to a point of introducing another service – the footage licensing site named Artgrid.

Online stock footage licensing has been of course already a functioning business for years and there are many sites offering it. Some of them even for free. I will not name any, but simple google search reveals lots of results varying in quality and price. There are subscription-based footage licensing sites already too. So how does Artgrid want to stand out of the crowd?

From the short mysterious teaser video we can already see the focus will be on stories. Artgrid claims to have an innovative solution to the painful process of digging through hundreds of clips in order to tell a story. All of the footage will be presented as part of a story created by the filmmakers themselves, rather than standalone clips. This is supposed to provide better options and speed up the process of finding the right stock clips for the story. I can’t yet quite imagine how exactly is it supposed to help and ease the process. I guess we will have to wait for feedback from users after Artgrid is launched to prove how effective it truly is.

The Artgrid catalog will include hand-picked footage from what they claim to be the world’s top cinematographers. Like Artlist, it will offer a simple, worldwide license, which includes commercial use and means the footage can be used anywhere. All the footage will be available professionally color graded or with LOG/RAW option (only for top-tier subscribers) and with unlimited downloads.

That brings us to the different plans. Artgrid will offer three annual plans which will be priced accordingly. All of them will have full access to the entire catalog. The difference will be in available resolutions and formats:

  • Junior plan – access to footage in HD
  • Creator plan – access to footage in 4K to 8K
  • Professional plan – access to footage in 4K to 8K + RAW/LOG formats and colors for further color grading. I am not sure if it will be true RAW – there are ProRes, DNxHD/HR and R3D logos on the website. We will have to see about that.

Artgrid is set to launch in spring 2019. Already now users can sign up for early access which includes 5 free clips giveaway. Pricing of the different plans will be available prior to the official launch.

Do you use stock footage for your work? If you subscribed to Artlist, how do you like it? What do you think of the new footage licensing site Artgrid? Let us know in the comments underneath the article.
