Sony F5 Euro price a lot lower than expected & first short film

December 10th, 2012 Jump to Comment Section 4

The Sony F5 & higher priced F55 have generated a lot of news throughout November. And there’s a good reason for that as the specs seem quite amazing. On the paper these cameras can deliver very high quality, up to 4K and have interesting color depth, codec and slow motion capabilities.

Most interesting for the readers of this blog is the lower priced Sony F5 camera. While the US price is as expected at $19,400 (UPDATED price: $16,490 LINK) the European price which is usually more or less the same is quite an interesting number.

At A.F. Marcotec, a trusted European reseller, the F5 goes for 13,300 € (excluding tax, including cinema5D gift code: 311212C5DF55). This translates to about $17400.

And that’s quite a good start for a camera that can record 2K (same 4K sensor as F55), 120fps, 422 10bit color space. It can do all that internally on specialized SxS Pro+ cards with its XAVC codec.

The F55 can do 4K and has a global shutter (no rolling shutter jello). But it’s a lot more expensive than the F5.

That all sounds very nice, but you should still wait for more preview and review material to see if this camera will fit your production. There’s a certain videoy look to most Sony cameras. The more color information a camera provides, the better this look can be transformed to reproduce more filmic colors and highlight rendition. Below is a little short shot on the F55 that should give a good sense of what the F5 will look like too.
