Kondor Blue Sony FX3 Cage Announced

Kondor Blue has just announced a new cage option for the Sony FX3. The cage has multiple NATO rails on both sides and top that you can remove to attach the XLR top handle of the FX3. At the bottom, there’s a built-in Arca Swiss plate to put it on gimbals such as the DJI Ronin RS2. Let’s take a closer look at it!

American accessories manufacturer Kondor Blue has been hard at work lately! Indeed, they recently released cages and rigging solutions for the Canon EOS C70, the Sony a7S III, and the Canon EOS R5/R6, to name a few.

The Sony FX3 was announced a month ago, and it’s already shipping. If you missed our review and mini-documentary shot with the camera, you can watch it here. There are still many debates around this camera – we even asked Sony to answer our questions about the camera – but Kondor Blue is one of the first third-party accessories companies to release its cage for the Sony FX3.

Kondor Blue Sony FX3 Cage – Features

Like all Kondor Blue cages, the Sony FX3 one is made out of aluminum. However, this time, it will be available in either gray or black colorway. Some of you guys have been complaining about the Canon EOS C70 cage, Kondor Blue listened, and this cage will also be available in black.

The cage nicely wraps around the camera to add an extra level of protection to the magnesium body of the Sony FX3. Like every good camera, it doesn’t block the flip-out screen, the buttons, or battery/memory card compartments.

On the left, right, and top of the cage, you’ll find NATO rails which are handy to mount handles/monitors/camera accessories to your camera. The nice thing is that the top NATO rail is removable, so you can still use the XLR top handle that comes with the camera.

On the left/right/top sides of the cage, you’ll also find plenty of 1/4-20″ mounting holes as well as one 3/8-16″ with ARRI locating pins mounting point per side.

The top of the Kondor Blue Sony FX3 cage features an additional cold shoe with a safety-pin, as well as a built-in bubble level to quickly and easily level your camera.

The cage’s bottom features a built-in Arca Swiss plate that is compatible with the DJI Ronin RS2. I’m not a huge fan of sideways built-in Arca Swiss plates, which, for me, are more suited for photography usage. Indeed, for video use, a straight Arca Swiss plate allows you to move your camera/rig back and forth to find the perfect balance point for tripod/shoulder rig operations. A solution could be a rotatable plate with locating pins (Kondor Blue if you’re reading this).

But, the bottom of the Kondor Blue Sony FX3 cage also features 3/8-16″ and 1/4-20″ mounting points to attach your own quick release plate. Also, there’s a built-in hex tool at the bottom of the cage.

Finally, the Kondor Blue Sony FX3 cage is compatible with the company’s Trigger Handle that allows you to start/stop recording via the Sony LANC protocol. It’ll give you additional 1/4-20″ and 3/8-16″ mounting points as well a 15mm side rod support and two cold shoe mounts.

Pricing and Availability

The Kondor Blue Sony FX3 cage will start shipping in May 2021 for $135.00. If you want to get the bundle with the Trigger Handle it retails for $220.00 with the cage.
