OM SYSTEM OM-1 and ATOMOS NINJA V/V+ Offer DCI 4K60p in ProRes RAW

The NINJA V/V+ gain yet another camera for ProRes RAW recording: the OM SYSTEM OM-1 (article here) can now send DCI 4K at up to 60 fps to an attached NINJA monitor/recorder, which records it as a 12-bit ProRes RAW stream.

The OM SYSTEM (formerly Olympus) OM-1 mirrorless MFT camera can already record DCI 4K video at up to 60 fps in 4:2:0 10-bit or up to 240 fps in Full HD internally. So if you’re happy with these specs, you can of course still use a connected NINJA V/V+ as a compact field monitor, but that’s about it.

If, however, you fancy 12-bit ProRes RAW recording, this update is for you! The camera can now output ProRes RAW in DCI 4K up to 60p in 12-bit via (micro) HDMI to the NINJA V/V+. Both devices need a free firmware update for this.

OM-1 + NINJA V/V+ Combo

According to the press release, both ATOMOS and OM SYSTEM are committed to supporting the full capabilities of ProRes RAW. In practical terms, this means offering filmmakers the maximum degree of flexibility when it comes to working with the codec in post-production. Accordingly, ProRes RAW clips recorded from the OM-1 will support White Balance and ISO adjustment sliders in Apple Final Cut Pro.

Support for ProRes RAW on the OM-1 requires the camera firmware to be updated to v1.1 (download here). The AtomOS 10.76 is available for download here (NINJA V) and here (NINJA V+).

Price and availability

The OM SYSTEM OM-1 MFT mirrorless camera sells for $2,200, the NINJA V is $399 and the V+ model retails for $599. The required firmware updates for both the OM-1 and the NINJA devices are now available to download free of charge.
