TAMRON 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD for FUJIFILM X-Mount – First Look

On the show floor at CP+ Camera & Photo Imaging Show 2023 in Japan, my colleague Johnnie stopped by TAMRON’s booth to learn more about their upcoming 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD wide-angle zoom lens for FUJIFILM X-mount mirrorless cameras. Let’s take a look!

Just a few days ago, third-party lens manufacturer TAMRON announced the development of a new wide-angle zoom for FUJIFILM X-mount APS-C cameras, the 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD.

Planned to be released in spring 2023, this glass, which is already available for Sony E mount cameras, will complement TAMRON’s existing X mount lens lineup: the 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD, 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD and 150-500mm F/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD.

While FUJIFILM already offers a few proprietary wide-angle zoom options, namely the XF 8-16mm f/2-8 R LM WR and XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR, the upcoming TAMRON 11-20mm represents a quite unique alternative, especially considering its fast, constant f/2.8 aperture and lightweight, portable design (the E-mount version only weighs 335g).

Whether you’re shooting landscapes, wide-angle close-ups, or vlogs, the 11-20mm focal range proves to be a “sweet spot” for a versatile ultra-wide-angle zoom for APS-C cameras. I personally always carry an EF-mount version of the Tokina atx-i 11-20mm f/2.8 CF to go with my RED KOMODO on run and gun shoots and never regret it.

Although a complete spec sheet is not available yet, other noteworthy features of this forthcoming zoom include a close focus distance of only 0.15m at 11mm, a RXD autofocus motor that is claimed to produce smooth-enough results for video shooting, a moisture-resistant construction as well as a front glass element with a fluorine protective coating.

Price and availability

There’s currently no official information about the price of the upcoming X-mount version of the TAMRON 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD wide-angle zoom. For reference, its Sony E-mount counterpart currently retails for $829.
