ZHIYUN MOLUS G60 and MOLUS X100 LED Lights Explained

ZHIYUN, the Chinese gimbal manufacturer, released two small LED lights, the MOLUS G60 and the MOLUS X100. Both fixtures are now available. The MOLUS G60 starts at $199, and the MOLUS X100 at $269. We had the chance to talk to Ryan Wang from ZHIYUN at their NAB booth in Las Vegas about the two new LED fixtures. Let’s take a closer look at them.

Both lights are clearly designed for a one-person crew with a run-and-gun shooting style, as the lights are so small that they fit easily in every camera bag. ZHIYUN introduced the MOLUS G60 and the MOLUS X100 as prototypes at the CP+ show in Japan in February this year. ZHIYUN MOLUS X100 – 100W output

The form factor of the MOLUS X100 is a bit unusual and, at first glance, it looks more like a mirrorless camera than an LED light. Nevertheless, the new MOLUS X100 is a full bi-color LED light and has an output of 100W. It has two knobs on the side to adjust the brightness from 0 to 100%, and the color temperature from 2700K to 6500K. It also has a small, integrated LCD screen to show you the current settings, or you can make all necessary changes by using ZHIYUN’s ZY Vega app.

Cooling

ZHIYUN designed a large fan for the MOLUS X100 to address the common problem of heat associated with every light fixture. It creates dynamic and efficient airflow and prevents the light from overheating. They claim it has a very low noise level and should not interfere with your shootings. Just keep in mind that although it has a very small form factor, it still provides only 100W and you might need to position the light very close to your subject. For any sound recording, it is crucial to have a very quiet fan.

Powering and modifiers

The MOLUS X100 can be powered by DC or with an optional X100 grip battery that attaches directly to the left side of the fixture. Unfortunately, this proprietary battery has a run time of only 30 minutes and a charging time of 2,5 hours. You can also power the light with a USB-C charger, but ZHIYUN recommends using a PD fast charger.

The compact MOLUS X100 has a unique design for an LED fixture, and you can attach several lighting modifiers to it. Although the light doesn’t have a standard Bowens Mount, ZHIYUN created a smaller mount to keep everything portable and to attach their own modifiers. If you already own lighting modifiers with a Bowens Mount, they created an adapter so you can use them on the MOLUS X100 and the G60 lights.

ZHIYUN MOLUS G60 – 60W output

The even smaller MOLUS G60 has an output of only 60W, and is clearly aiming at YouTubers, streamers, and other social media content creators. With its cubical form, the small LED light fits right in your hand and in every camera bag. The body is the size of a Rubik’s Cube – 9×6,6×6,6cm / 3,57×2,6×2,6in and weighs only 300gr / 10.6oz.

The MOLUS G60 can be powered with a multi-voltage AC adapter, but with an optional USB-C charging cable, you can use the small fixture with an optional attached battery for wireless use. For example, you could use a normal mobile phone power bank to run it independently. This is a very nice feature and it makes that little light quite flexible and versatile!

It has the same variable 2700-6500K color range as the MOLUS X100 with high CRI/TLCI 96/97 ratings, and it is dimmable from 0 to 100%. There is a small LCD screen on the rear side, and color and brightness are adjusted with two knobs. Like its bigger brother, you can also make changes wirelessly using Zhiyun’s ZY Vega app.

The MOLUS G60 includes the in-house developed DynaVort Cooling System, with special heat sinks and fans to prevent overheating. According to ZHIYUN, this technology guarantees cooling efficiency through intelligent over-airflow control and a very low noise level.

The MOLUS G60 comes with a multi-voltage AC adapter, and all the necessary accessories like a mini reflector and a dome diffuser. They also offer a combo kit and, in addition to the reflector and diffuser, the kit includes a mini tripod, a Bowens mount adapter, and a mini softbox with a grid.
