CreamSource CreamOS 2.5.0 for Vortex Series Lights Released - New DMX Control Modes and More

Australian lighting manufacturer CreamSource has released a new firmware update for its Vortex Series RGBWW LED lights: CreamOS 2.5.0. This version includes multilingual support, at least 30 new DMX modes, CRMX2 support, and multiple CRMX updates. So let’s take a closer look at this free firmware update, available now!

CreamSource is a relatively new lighting manufacturer specializing in high-quality lighting solutions for the film and television industry. In July 2020, the company launched the Vortex8, a 650W 2×1′ RGBW LED fixture which is waterproof and built to take abuse on set. Later, CreamSource launched the Vortex4, a smaller 325W 1×1′ panel with similar features to its bigger brother but still made with the same durable and long-lasting casing. If you want to learn more about the Vortex series, we had a nice talk with CEO Tama Berkeljon during our Virtual Show.

The Vortex series lights mainly aim at feature films, large production companies, and rental houses worldwide. CreamSource often releases new firmware updates for its product and continues adding new features requested by filmmakers, which is always nice to see. With the new CreamSource CreamOS 2.5.0, the company continued to listen to its end-users and added a couple of new features.

CreamSource CreamOS 2.5.0

CreamSource Vortex series LED lights are powered by the CreamOS operating system. With the newest CreamSource CreamOS 2.5.0 update, the company added multilingual support so both the Vortex4 and Vortex8 can be operated in Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, Korean, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and of course, English.

Next, if you are controlling your lights wired or wirelessly, here are all the new features:

  • Multiple new DMX modes with a “reduced zone” feature. It means you can manually control and operate 2 or 4 pixels in Split, Bars, and Grid configuration. In addition, CreamSource says it’ll save some DMX footprint when you don’t need all zones.
  • Introduction of the DMX “Control Channel” that allows you to change settings remotely, such as High-Speed Mode, DMX Smoothing, Dimming curve, etc. This is handy as you won’t need to reach the fixture physically to adjust settings or use RDM anymore.

  • Support for CRMX2. CRMX2 is an update by LumenRadio to the CRMX protocol. In a nutshell, CRMX2 supports 8 Universes, so your Vortex fixtures will now work with the latest LumenRadio’s Stardust. Also, it allows the Universe output to be selected and the manual linking key entered.
  • Finally, your Vortex series lights can now act as CRMX transmitters. According to CreamSource, they will forward sACN, wired DMX, or BLE data wirelessly to other fixtures via CRMX.
