Alteon.io Brings Proxy Sync to iPad App for Final Cut Pro

Alteon.io announces its iPad app now supports offline/online editing workflows for Final Cut Pro. Alteon automatically generates proxies that sync with raw footage in the cloud, bridging the gap between the iPad and macOS versions of Final Cut Pro.

After a shoot, you can upload raw footage to the cloud and Alteon will transcode the footage to H.265 MP4 proxy files. Alteon.io syncs Final Cut proxies so editors can download these proxies for use in Final Cut Pro for iPad. When you are ready for the online conform, Final Cut Pro for Mac can relink back to the original raw files.

Additionally, users can add meta tags and notes after uploading the raw footage to Alteon. Review and approval comments are SMPTE time-stamped, which helps to simplify conversations between team members.

Alteon is also a member of the Final Cut Pro Ecosystem, offering a workflow extension for the macOS version of Final Cut Pro that integrates cloud assets directly into the NLE.

Alteon.io offers integration with Premiere and Final Cut Pro, along with a web interface. Collaborators can log in to securely review footage, make comments, and download media.

Uploading raw files to the cloud for iPad editing

Alteon.io syncs Final Cut Pro proxies created from original raw files. However, uploading raw video files to the cloud for transcoding may be challenging. Upload speeds are still an issue in many places outside of a studio. You can see from this upload calculator that if your upload speed is 35 Mbps (Xfinity’s highest upload speed tier for business or personal in my area), and if you shot 1TB of data, it would take almost three days to upload it. In a case like this, it would be more efficient to run proxies locally and then upload them to the cloud. If you uploaded 50GB of proxies at 35 Mbps, it would take around 3.5 hours to upload.

Alteon features IBM’s Aspera technology. They claim it increases upload speeds up to six times faster than other methods. These kinds of advancements will be needed for the next generation of video workflows.

It is great to see cloud service providers like Alteon laying the groundwork for a cloud-first future where collaboration across devices, NLEs, and operating systems will be the standard.  We spoke to Matt from Alteon at NAB 2023, and you can watch the interview here.
