Sony PDT-FP1 Portable Transmitter Announced - High-Speed & Low-Latency

PDT-FP1 overview

Sony’s new PDT-FP1 is a wireless device designed for environments that demand high-speed performance. The unit works in scenarios where wi-fi is unavailable, thanks to its high speed, low latency, mobile data communication, and 5G compatibility.

With the PDT-FP1, photos and videos are sent via a LAN port or with 5G, including overseas transmission, with dual SIM support. The unit offers live streaming and FTP transfer, and its wireless communication should simplify equipment needs and setups in remote locations or where the camera and delivery spots are in different places. It also features two USB-C ports (one for charging) and an HDMI connection.

The PDT-FP1 has a manageable body shape and size, weighing around 300gr/0.66lbs. Besides the screw hole for securing the camera to a tripod, it includes a strap hole for attaching cables, accessories, and more. The unit’s storage holds 8GB (RAM) and 256GB (ROM) internal memory and up to 1TB microSDXC card support.

High-speed, low-latency, and overseas transmission

The announcement from Sony highlights a unique antenna structure optimized for high-speed and low-latency performance. The PDT-FP1 supports a wide range of bands like domestic and overseas 5G millimeter wave bands, Sub6 communication, stand-alone 5G communication, and local 5G.

In addition to the plug-in physical SIM, the unit allows a dual SIM setup with an eSIM that does not require plugging and unplugging. We can automatically choose the SIM that provides a better connection based on the radio conditions.

Cooling system

The PDT-FP1 has a cooling fan that keeps the unit performing in environments up to 40°C. In addition, although it has a thin design, its structure dissipates the internal heat for stable, continuous communication. Depending on the shooting situation, the operation mode of the cooling fan can be set to auto, cooling priority, and silent priority.

Workflow and compatibility with Sony cameras

When the PDT-FP1 is connected with a cable to any of the supported Sony cameras, the footage can be imported and transferred to the specified FTP server and Sony’s cloud service, similar to what brands like Blackmagic are doing with their broadcast products. The device is equipped with a 6.1-inch display where the file transmission status and communication quality can be checked while shooting.

Price and availability

As this is their first announcement, we are sure Sony will provide more information about the PDT-FP1 as the release date comes closer. The device’s release date is March 22, 2024, and its suggested retail price will be 159,500 yen (around $1090). Pre-order sales should start from 10:00 on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Stay tuned!
