Nikon announced a new NIKKOR Z zoom lens, the 28-400mm f/4-8 VR. The lens offers 5.5-stop image stabilization and weather-sealed construction, making it ideal for hand-held, outdoor creators. Let’s take a closer look at this new release from Nikon!

The new NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR is a versatile high-magnification lens compatible with the Nikon Z mount system. With a focal range covering almost any situation, the lens is mainly aimed at outdoor photographers (landscape, street, sports, etc.) or studio photographers who have some available lighting due to its f/4-8 aperture. Its versatility makes it a perfect companion for Nikon Z camera users.

A compact all-in-one lens

One of the main characteristics of the NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR is its compact size and weight (only 725g), making it ideal as an everyday carry lens. Its focal range makes it a versatile lens covering from wide-angle to telephoto with a 14.2x zoom, perfect for nature shooters, bird photography, etc. The lens also features a minimum focus distance of 0.2m at 28mm and 1.2m at 400mm, allowing photographers to easily capture small details with a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.35x.

The NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR has a stepping motor (STM) to capture fast-moving subjects. Its 5-stop stabilization will make hand-held shooters happy, especially in extreme telephoto ranges and low-light situations. When paired with a compatible camera, the lens increases its stabilization thanks to the Synchro VR function. For video shooters, the lens offers linear MF operation for better focusing accuracy and functions such as focus-breathing suppression.

Finally, the lens is designed with sealing on different parts, including movable barrel elements, to prevent dirt or water from entering the lens. This makes the lens dust- and drip-resistant, although Nikon warns that resistance is not guaranteed in all situations or under all conditions.
