Tokina Adds Lenses to Vista-P Series - 40mm T1.5, 65mm T1.5, 105mm T1.5, and 135mm T1.5

Tokina Cinema introduced four new lenses to their Vista-P series: the 40mm T1.5, 65mm T1.5, 105mm T1.5, and 135mm T1.5, which all cover Vista Vision-sized sensors and blend a vintage character with a modern performance. Let’s take a closer look at them!

Tokina Cinema’s team has been working closely with cinematographers and rental houses to create their Vista-P lens series, which was announced late last year. The newly added Vista-P 40mm T1.5, 65mm T1.5, 105mm T1.5, and 135mm T1.5 are the result of this work – a series of lenses with a vintage touch but offering a modern performance.

Tokina Cinema Vista-P overview

The new Vista-P lenses produce high-resolution images in the center of the frame with a swirly bokeh towards the edge, offering almost no breathing and a maximum aperture of T1.5, ensuring subject and background separation. Tokina Cinema talks about an image similar to Helios-44 and Petzval, which is normalized when stopping down. However, the look is cleaner and offers more resolution than vintage lenses.

The Vista-P design derives from the popular Vista primes used in shows like Ted Lasso or The Gentlemen, to name a few. The four lenses are factory-tuned, featuring increased air-to-glass distance to introduce spherical distortion and a lower contrast, similar to vintage lenses. As the lenses are designed for Vista Vision/Full Frame sensors, the spherical distortion effect is more evident when using these sensors than when using Super35 or smaller sensors, where the effect is lessened at the edges of the frame.

The Tokina Cinema Vista-P lenses will be available as already fully modified lenses, with this modification taking place at the Tokina Cinema factory in Japan. Aside from the mentioned features, the Vista-P lenses have image circles with a 46.7mm area of definition, covering large format cinema cameras. The lenses share the same 114mm front O.D. and nine-blade iris, and they come in PL, LPL, Sony E, EF, or MFT mount.
