Laowa Nanomorph LF Anamorphic Lens Series Discussed – Designed for Large Format Cinematography

At IBC 2024, CineD’s Johnnie spoke with Marcus Kwong of Laowa to discuss their latest lens series—the Nanomorph LF Series, a new range of anamorphic lenses designed for large format cameras. Following the success of their Super35 Nanomorph series, Laowa has expanded their product line with focal lengths of 32mm, 42mm, 55mm, and 85mm, specifically tailored for full-frame and large-format cinematography.

Full-frame and 1.5x squeeze

When asked what sets the Nanomorph LF series apart, Marcus highlighted that the lenses cover not only full-frame but a bit more, making them compatible with cameras like the Alexa Mini LF. They will offer cinematographers broader image coverage while maintaining a constant 1.5x squeeze factor across the range. This squeeze provides the signature anamorphic look, delivering a wide aspect ratio while preserving image detail. Marcus also said the lenses are front anamorphic, ensuring the classic anamorphic characteristics, including beautiful lens flares and aesthetically pleasing background bokeh.

The choice behind the focal lengths

Johnnie inquired why Laowa chose focal lengths so close together—like 32mm and 42mm. Marcus explained that these choices offer subtle variations that give cinematographers flexibility. “They’re similar to 28mm and 35mm but a little wider for those who want to capture more detail in the frame,” he said. This range of focal lengths should help filmmakers achieve the right balance of wide-angle shots without compromising detail.

Wide range of mounts and three flare options

There is a wide range of available mounts for the Nanomorph LF series, including PL, Canon EF and RF, Sony E, L-mount, and more. Marcus said that despite the fact that not all of these brands produce large-format cameras, Laowa wanted to provide maximum compatibility so filmmakers could experiment with different setups.

The lightweight design—only 900g/1.98 lbs—makes these lenses particularly well-suited for action shots and commercial projects like music videos, for example. “We wanted filmmakers to be free to explore what these lenses can do in various contexts,” Marcus added.

The Nanomorph LF series has three flare color options: amber, blue, and silver. The silver flare is particularly unique, as it can shift to other colors according to the color of the light source. Additionally, the lenses feature a minimum focusing distance of .49m/1.7 feet. Even in extreme closeups, according to Marcus, the lens will give you a good bokeh and a very organic out-of-focus area.

Why the name “Nanomorph”?

Johnnie also asked why Laowa chose to name this new series “Nanomorph,” the same as their Super 35 Nanomorph lens counterparts. Marcus explained, “Both the Super35 and the LF series share the same compact, ‘nano’ form factor, which is key to their design. These are small, lightweight anamorphic lenses, which is why the name fits both series.”

Price and availability

The Laowa Nanomorph LF lenses are expected to be available in Q4 2024 with an estimated price of $2,000 and will also be available in bundles. More detailed pricing information and exact release dates will be announced closer to the launch. For more information, please visit the Laowa website here.
