Lexar 2TB Professional Go Portable SSD for USB-C Devices Released

Following the trend of shot on iPhone, American company Lexar has released a new storage 2TB solution aimed at smartphone and tablet filmmaking. The small and fast device allows for memory storage of up to 2TB in a compact body that can plug directly into your smartphone or other USB-C device. If you’re interested in iPhone filmmaking but need more storage for your videos, this may be the solution for you. Let’s see if this is something that you’ll need in your filmmaking arsenal.

A storage solution for iPhone shooting

Lexar’s Professional Go Portable SSD has a small footprint and is designed to plug directly into a compatible USB-C device. A USB-C extension cable is included, allowing you to position the device on the back of your phone/tablet, so a direct plug-in is not required. It weighs only 14.1gm / 0.5 ounces and measures a mere 25.4 x 43.4 x 8.1mm / 1.00 x 1.71 x 0.32 inches. As stated, the footprint is extremely small.

At the time of release, there are 1TB and 2TB storage options available for $189 and $299, respectively. Each provides a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 male interface, with read speeds of up to 1050 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1000 MB/s. It is also dust and water-resistant with an IP65 rating, meaning it can withstand splashing, dripping, misting, and rain but not submersion or prolonged exposure to water. But, probably, neither can your phone (the iPhone X and subsequent have IP68 ratings).

Some of the specs include:

  • 1TB or 2TB Storage Capacity
  • USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 Male Interface
  • Read Speeds up to 1050 MB/s
  • Write Speeds up to 1000 MB/s
  • Bus Powered
  • Drop Protection up to 3.3′
  • IP65 Rated for Dust and Water Protection
  • Includes Protective Silicone Case
  • Includes Male to Female Adapter
  • Windows, Mac, iOS & Android Compatible

Who is this for?

While external storage for photos and video has been available for quite some time, it’s nice to have a beefy SSD with a small footprint. And I feel this is where the Professional Go excels. If you want to film on your iPhone, this could make a great addition whilst barely noticing any difference in weight.

Personally, I could see this as being a great Behind The Scenes camera storage solution on set. Plug in a USB-C SSD to your phone or tablet, and you can shoot hours of video. Then, when you’re done, hand off the SSD to your DIT or whoever manages your footage.

Or, if you’re practicing filmmaking on your iPhone or iPad, you have a great storage solution in this device. There’s no need to attach a Samsung T7 to the back of your phone and run a cable around it. The Lexar Professional Go SSD just plugs right in! Indie filmmaking is all about sensible solutions, and I definitely see the value in something like this.

Expand on your Lexar Professional Go System

If this is something that gets you excited about the possibilities, I lastly want to mention that Lexar has envisioned this as an entire system to help with your iPhone filmmaking. We’ve recently reported on the Lexar Professional Go Hub expansion system that now plugs into your Professional Go SSD to give you the most value for on-the-go filmmakers. Check out more information here if you’re interested.

Price and availability

The 1TB option is available now for $189.99. If you want to preorder the 2TB option, you can do so for $299.99.

If you’re like me and have a drawer full of USB drives to use as external storage for your phone or tablet, this could be a great solution for you. But I want to hear your thoughts about it! Is this something you’d want to use on set? Let us know in the comments!
