Sennheiser Profile 2.4GHz Two-Person Wireless Audio System Announced

Aimed at creators, the new Sennheiser Profile wireless audio kit communicates on the 2.4GHz frequency and offers a kit with two transmitters, a receiver, and a charging bar that also functions as a handheld microphone. Each transmitter offers 24-bit internal recording, a built-in mic, and a 3.5mm mic input. The receiver offers a safety channel, analog and digital outputs, and more.

The traditional German audio gear manufacturer Sennheiser is known among filmmakers mostly for their microphones, analog wireless sets, or digital dual-band wireless systems, such as the Sennheiser AVX. The company just launched a new affordable 2.4GHz-only wireless audio system called Sennheiser Profile. Let’s take a quick look at the details.

Sennheiser Profile – affordable 2.4GHz wireless audio

Sennheiser Profile is a new two-person wireless microphone system with a dual-channel receiver. It communicates via 2.4GHz frequency, so we can consider this a direct competitor to countless wireless audio kits from DJI, RØDE, and many more. Sennheiser claims the maximum range is 803.8ft / 245m (TX to RX, unobstructed line of sight) or up to 492.1ft / 150m (with obstruction).

As the 2.4GHz frequency tends to be overcrowded in many locations and, therefore, often exhibits signal interference, the transmitter units offer on-board recording for added safety. I honestly would not even consider buying a 2.4GHz wireless audio system without this feature, but thankfully, almost all such systems now include it.

Sennheiser Profile transmitter (TX)

The Sennheiser Profile transmitter unit includes a built-in microphone, but there is also a 3.5mm audio input connector for connecting an external microphone (lavalier or other compatible microphone). Thankfully, the 3.5mm port has a thread, so the mic can be secured (if supported by the mic).

Each transmitter unit features 16GB of internal memory for backup recording. This should be enough for up to 30 hours of 24-bit 48kHz audio recording. Unfortunately, there is no 32-bit Float recording option. Each TX unit weighs 1oz / 27g. The approximate runtime of the 280mAh built-in battery is 7 hours.

The signal-to-noise ratio of the included omnidirectional mic capsules is 78.5 dBA, according to Sennheiser. Maximum SPL is 113 dB SPL, and the frequency range is from 60 Hz to 20 kHz.

Safety Channel Mode outputs audio at a selected sound level in one channel and at a lower level in the other to prevent distortion and clipping in unstable audio environments.

Sennheiser Profile receiver (RX)

The receiver unit (RX) has a 3.5mm analog and USB-C digital audio output so that it can be connected to various cameras or mobile devices. The kit comes with a male USB-C adapter, a Lightning adapter, and a 3.5mm TRS to TRS cable, so you do not have to purchase anything separately.

The RX also offers a 3.5mm headphone output for monitoring. The OLED touchscreen at the back can be used to monitor audio levels or change various settings. Sennheiser claims that the RX can run for up to 7 hours when fully charged. The RX size is very compact, with a weight of 30g / 1.06 oz.

It is worth noting that there is no timecode support, and Sennheiser claims the latency is less than 8ms.

Charging bar

The wireless charging bar and handheld microphone transmitter offer added functionality. The bar charges the receiver and transmitters simultaneously for an additional 11 hours of runtime. Additionally, it can function as a handheld omnidirectional microphone/transmitter. The internal battery of the charging bar can be fully recharged via USB-C in under three hours.

The bar weighs 7oz / 198g, and its dimensions are 6 x 2.2 x 1.6″ (152 x 55 x 41mm).

Price and availability

The new Sennheiser Profile wireless microphone system is available now for pre-order. The whole kit, which has two transmitters, a receiver, and a charging bar, retails for $299 (around €310, including VAT in Europe). On top of the mentioned parts, the kit also includes a cold shoe mount for the RX, a clip magnet for TX, a pouch to carry the system in, and windscreens for both the TX and charging bar microphones. Additionally, you can buy the receiver or the clip-on wireless transmitter/recorder separately for $99.95 each. The charging bar retails for $59.95.
