ARRI recently unveiled the Operator Set for ALEXA 35, a camera support system designed to improve ergonomics and functionality for those who frequently switch between handheld operation on the shoulder and tripod shooting. At the core of this new system is the Touchdown baseplate, which ARRI designed to be faster and more secure than the VCT-14. Let’s have a look!

The Operator Set is ARRI’s third support system designed for the ALEXA 35, following the Production Set and the Lightweight Set, which cater to traditional on-set and super lightweight applications, respectively. ARRI developed the Operator Set after evaluating their expansion into the live entertainment shooting sector, coupled with discussions with their client NFL Films. NFL Films had requested a system that would facilitate a smooth transition from the AMIRA, which they had been using, to the more advanced ALEXA 35. The result is the Operator Set, which incorporates a new design in the tripod mounting system.
The Touchdown tripod mount
The Touchdown system from ARRI consists of the TBP-1 baseplate and the TRP-1 receiver plate. According to ARRI, this quick tripod mounting system offers faster and more secure mounting compared to the traditional VCT-14, significantly reducing any wiggle or play.
The TBP-1 baseplate has a self-aligning design and side lever lock that allows for quick and secure mounting and detaching of the camera from a tripod. There are rosettes for attaching handgrips and a 15mm LWS rod bracket for additional accessories. Additionally, there is a very long shoulder pad for adjusting the camera’s balance when carrying.

The TRP-1 receiver plate enables easy transitions between tripod and handheld setups, with rubber pads for stability and multiple tripod thread options. The unit is very robust and composed of stainless steel, and the plate’s tension can be adjusted as needed using a screw on the back.
The Top Operator Plate and Grip
The Operator Set also includes the TOP-1 Operator Top Plate and the TOG-1 Top Operator Grip. Top Operator Plate (TOP-1) is designed to tightly fit the form-factor of the camera. Mount to the camera body with 5 screws and leave it attached to the camera so it’s ready to go. The TOP-1 features a 15mm LWS rod bracket for matte boxes, etc., and also provides multiple 3/8″-16, 1/4″-20, and M4 threads.
The Top Operator Grip (TOG-1) with a responsibly-sourced walnut handle slides into the top unit easily and locks in with a lever on the side. Across the top of the handle and at the front are multiple accessory mounting holes.
Price and availability
The ARRI Operator Set is available for purchase at $4,040, or you can purchase the elements individually. The Touchdown system can also be used with the ALEXA Mini or ALEXA Mini LF if you combine it with the Balance Utility Dovetail (the BUD-3) on those cameras.
