Chinese lens manufacturer AstrHori (previously known under the name Rockstar) has recently released a new affordable lens for FUJIFILM GFX medium format cameras: the AstrHori 40mm F/5.6. This manual lens is lightweight at only 350g and comes at a very reasonable $289 price point. So let’s take a closer look at it!
The FUJIFILM GFX lineup of medium format cameras was released a couple of years ago. More recently, the GFX 100/100S got the option to record in Blackmagic RAW externally. However, lens choices for GFX cameras have been pretty limited, even if FUJIFILM recently released the GF 20-35mm F/4 wide-angle zoom.
However, some third-party lens manufacturers like Laowa or TTArtisan try to develop cost-efficient lenses for content creators on a budget. AstrHori is joining the party with the recent launch of a fully-manual 40mm F/5.6 lens for GFX medium format cameras.

AstrHori 40mm F/5.6 features
The AstrHori 40mm F/5.6 lens is a fully-manual lens for FUJIFILM GFX cameras. The lens body is mainly made of aluminum, weighing only 350g/12.3oz. Moreover, with a length of only 7.9cm/3.1in, it won’t take up a lot of space in your camera bag!
The Art & Science of Lenses

A 40mm lens on a medium format camera (close to a 31mm full-frame equivalent) is a great all-around lens for capturing landscape, street photography, and architecture. In addition, the lens has a pretty large focus ring for precise adjustment.

Lens design
The lens design comprises seven elements in five groups. The minimum focusing distance is 41cm/16.1in, and the front filter diameter is 62mm.
There is no information about the number of aperture blades. However, the company states that the “AstrHori 40mm F5.6 will present a pentagonal starburst effect at the aperture of F/8”.

Price and availability
The AstrHori 40mm F/5.6 is available now for $289/€299.
