Last April, the Atomos Ninja Phone was introduced – an accessory that allows the iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro to record in 10-bit Apple ProRes and act as an HDR monitor, recorder, and streamer. It works with a mirrorless or DSLR camera or any HDMI-capable camera. The price was recently cut in half and is now $199 / €199.
The iPhone 16 Pro is capable of filming up to 120 fps in 4K in Dolby Vision and also ProRes and Apple Log externally. It also has a Super Retina XDR OLED display featuring 2622 x 1206 resolution at 460 ppi with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, making it ideal as an external camera monitor.

Atomos Ninja Phone – features
The Ninja Phone accessory/”co-processor unit” clips onto an iPhone 15 Pro/16 Pro, connects via USB-C, and is compatible with an HDMI camera. From there, the video signal is converted into a higher-quality video format. With the Atomos Ninja app, the iPhone can record and monitor in 10-bit ProRes HDR or 8-bit SDR – supporting vertical video at 9:16 – along with streaming capabilities.
This includes 4K at 24/25/30, DCI 4K at 24/25/30, 1080p, and 720p at multiple frame rates. Different codecs are supported, such as ProRes HQ, ProRes 422, ProRes LT, ProRes Proxy, H.265 Main 10, H.265 8b, and H.264 8b. Meanwhile, audio is recorded in 2-channel 48kHz PCM.
Mastering Color
The Atomos Ninja Phone also supports streaming via 5G or Wi-Fi 6E to popular platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitch. It supports 10-bit H.265 encoding.

Price and availability
The Atomos Ninja Phone is available at authorized dealers, including B&H (as of writing this article, CVP hasn’t reflected the price drop yet). The $199/€199 price is a great entry point for those looking to get into the world of Atomos and a monitor-recorder that supports HDR and 10-bit Apple ProRes. And of course that doesn’t factor in the cost of an iPhone 15 Pro / 16 Pro. The Atomos Ninja retails for $599/€599 and doesn’t require a separate phone.
