So what’s the best cage of them all? Here’s a quick roundup of all the contenders, their strengths and weaknesses in order of highest rated to lowest rated.

Varavon Armor II a7S Cage

10x green lights for a great HDMI cable protector, perfect access to other outputs on the side, very easy toolless assembly and disassembly, securely locking the camera to the cage, the possibility to use the Sony XLR-K2M audio module, access to the lens release button, an intelligent handle design and outstanding overall ergonomics.

We gave 1x orange light for the lack of surface area at the base.

This one is the editor’s choice and recommended if you want to work with the Sony XLR-K2M audio module.

IndiPRO Tools Thor a7S Cage

9x green lights for good HDMI cable protection, access to other outputs on the side, easy assembly, securely locking the camera to the cage, access to the lens release button, the possibility to use the Sony XLR-K2M audio module, a built-in Sachtler/Manfrotto baseplate and a good rod support option.

We gave 2x orange lights for the mediocre handle design and ergonomics.

This cage is our second choice, it’s not perfect, but ticks most boxes and is our recommendation if you’re on a budget.

LockCircle BirdCage A7

8x green lights for outstanding HDMI cable protection, access to other outputs on the side, perfect locking of the camera into the cage, access to the lens release button, professional baseplate mounting options and great overall ergonomics and build quality.

We gave 2x orange lights for the difficulty to assemble & disassemble this cage and the missing coldshoe and evf mounting options on the handle.

We gave 1x red light because on this cage you cannot use the Sony XLR-K2M audio module.

This cage is our recommendation if you’re looking for a perfect second skin for your Sony A7s and if you don’t need to use the audio module and can afford the high price. In terms of quality and precision this is the best cage to get.

These are the three winning cages for the Sony A7s recommended by us.

The Skier LiteCage for A7 receives an honorable mention for it’s handle design that had the audio module in mind, but received bad scores for the lack of handle security.

The Motionnine CubeCage for Sony a7S is a good cage with some bold ideas, but it can still be improved upon.
We gave this one:

The only cage we would personally not use anymore is the Movcam Cage for Sony A7S that raised too many red flags for us. Some improvements would do good in our opinion. If you use this cage permanently (no disassembly) and lock it to the Metabones adapter with the extra accessory this solves our major concerns.
