Canon EOS C80 & C400 to get Native frame.io Camera-to-Cloud Integration

Canon has teamed up with Adobe to bring the Frame.io Camera to Cloud (C2C) technology to select Canon cameras, starting with the EOS C400 and EOS C80 (hopefully with more coming soon!) This lets users send proxy files straight from the camera to the cloud even while shooting, streamlining the workflow between production and post-production teams across different locations. It’s set to be released later this year, so let’s have a look.

Frame.io is a platform conceived in 2015 (and purchased by Adobe in 2021). The gist of the program is that it lets filmmakers send footage straight from their cameras to the cloud so the production team has access and can instantly review, comment, and approve no matter where they are located. It integrates with editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, making collaboration faster and easier. Plus, the cloud storage is secure, giving everyone on the project quick and safe access to the files. If you’re interested in how this software, even in its early stages, impacted productions, my colleague Graham wrote an insightful article back in 2019 about his experience. The program has evolved quite a bit since then (Version 4 was released just this April), but the core idea remains the same. And, in case you missed it, check out our review of the Canon EOS C80 here.

Detailed features of Frame.io C2C integration

The core of this collaboration centers around the Frame.io Camera to Cloud (C2C) integration. Proxy files – smaller, lower-resolution versions of the footage – are transmitted directly from the camera to the cloud, even while filming is still in progress. The proxy files maintain the same filename, timecode, and metadata as the original high-resolution files, making it easy to replace them in the workflow once the full-quality files are available.

Canon’s EOS C400 and C80 cameras will be able to simultaneously send proxy files while recording both original camera files (OCF) and proxies internally. Proxy files can be transmitted via wireless or wired Ethernet connections and automatically uploaded to the cloud, streamlining the workflow by allowing videographers to quickly share them with their team, even if they’re in different locations.

Price and availability

This new feature, which is activated directly in-camera, will be part of a free firmware update set for release in Winter 2024. It will be available for download from the Canon USA website.

How do you think native Adobe’s Frame.io integration will impact your workflow with the Canon C80 or C400? Let us know in the comments.
