NAB 2014-Canon expands Cinema EOS System with first ever cine-servo lens

Canon has expanded its Cinema EOS System with the launch of the CN7x17 KAS S – its first-ever cinema lens to feature a servo drive unit, designed for broadcast and handheld use with large sensor cameras.

CN7X17 KAS S – SUPER 35MM SENSOR OPTICS

CN7X17 KAS SThe CN7x17 KAS S has been created for the world of TV production – a fast-paced, mobile environment for which conventional Super 35mm format cine lenses were not designed. To support operators in this field, Canon’s new cine-servo lens combines decades of experience in the design of market-leading broadcast lenses with technology derived from its high-performance cine zooms – creating a tool of unprecedented quality, versatility and usability.

The lens is great for those wanting that familiar ENG on-the-shoulder design with a Super35 body, like the Canon C300 / C500, Sony F5 / F55, or the Arri AMIRA.

With a best-in-class focal length of 17-120mm, the lens is tailor-made for camera operators in traditional broadcast environments, whilst retaining the benefits of Canon’s renowned cine lenses for movie productions where a more fluid shooting style is required.

The new cine-servo lens has been designed to respond to the evolving needs of broadcast professionals, who are increasingly turning to large sensor cameras across a wide range of production categories, from drama to documentaries and current affairs. Offering operators the best of both worlds, it provides the functionality expected from traditional broadcast lenses whilst also capturing video of the highest quality with a distinct ‘cinematic look’. Both EF-mount (CN7x17 KAS S /E1) and industry-standard PL-mount (CN7x17 KAS S /P1) variants will be available.

Built to exacting optical standards, the cine-servo lens leverages Canon’s long-established expertise in lens design. Delivering the quality needed to shoot in 4K, the 7x optical zoom enables a hugely versatile 17-120mm focal length with a maximum T-number of T2.95, providing the flexibility to cover an unparalleled range of shooting situations with a lens of this type.

The servo drive unit makes the CN7x17 KAS S ideal for use in mobile productions such as documentaries. The drive unit is the same size as those on typical portable lenses, providing the same feel in operation, and making long shoots more comfortable. High speed zoom, iris and focusing operation allow operators to respond rapidly to changes in a scene, while low speed drive functionality offers unrivalled control over slow zooming to ensure the desired effect can be achieved. Immediate start-up means shots won’t be missed in dynamic situations.

Pricing and Availability

The Canon CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 zoom lens (CN7x17 KAS S/E1 in EF mount and CN7x17 KAS S/P1 in PL mount) is expected to be available in August 2014 for a suggested list price of $31,350.
