Canon RF 24mm F1.8 MACRO and RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 Zoom Released

Canon has just introduced two new full-frame lenses for the RF mount: The Canon RF 24mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM prime lens and the Canon RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM zoom lens. Both are relatively small and lightweight, and both sit under the $600 mark.

If you’re the proud owner of a Canon EOS R-series camera and looking for a new lens, this might be right up your alley.

Canon has just introduced two new lenses and one of them is a dedicated macro lens, while the other appears to be a fairly versatile (albeit quite wide-angle) zoom lens that ranges from 15-30mm.

Both new lenses are not necessarily among Canon’s high-end models, but they are quite light and don’t cost a fortune. Let’s have a closer look!

Canon RF 24mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM

The RF 24mm F1.8 features a 5-stop optical image stabilizer and quiet autofocus. So it seems like a versatile yet compact choice for filmmakers and photographers alike. If your EOS R-series body sports in body stabilization, the above number increases from 5 to 6.5 stops.

The minimum distance is 14cm (the lens itself measures 74.4mm x 63.1mm – diameter x length). It has a 52mm thread for attaching front filters and the lens construction comprises 11 lenses in 9 groups (including 1x PMo Aspherical, 1x UD). The iris diaphragm consists of 9 aperture blades. The entire lens weighs only 270 g.

The lens has a focus ring, an assignable control ring, an AF/MF switch, and a switch to toggle stabilization.

If you need a bit more reach, this new zoom lens could be a good choice, although the 15-30mm range still leans pretty heavily towards wide-angle.

Optical image stabilization offers 5.5 stops (7 stops when combined with in-body stabilization). The lens has a 67mm filter thread and offers 13 lenses in 11 groups (including 1 x PMo Aspherical, 2 x UD). The minimum focus distance is 28 cm across the zoom range.

Just like the Canon RF 24mm macro, this lens has a focus ring, but this time there is no dedicated control ring. Instead, one of the switches determines whether the ring should be used for focusing or for an assignable function. The other ring is used to control the zoom, and finally there is another switch to activate stabilization.

It’s 76.6 x 88.4 (diameter x length) in size, and it weighs 390g.

Pricing

Both lenses are available for preorder, so they should be ready for shipping really soon. The pricing is as follows:

  • Canon RF 24mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM: $599
  • Canon RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM: $549
