DJI Action 2 Firmware Update Brings Gyro Data Support for Gyroflow Stabilization

The compact modular DJI Action 2 camera recently got a new firmware update that adds gyro data to its 4K video files (4K 4:3 24/25/30/48/50/60fps or 4K 16:9 100/120fps, stabilization off, FOV wide) for stabilization with Gyroflow. Additionally, the update improves compatibility with Android 13.0.

The ultra-compact modular action camera DJI Action 2 is not the latest and greatest action camera that DJI offers. In fact, DJI already released the new DJI Osmo Action 3 last year in September. This is, however, not a direct successor of the Action 2 as the camera is much larger and heavier and resembles rather the original Osmo Action.

Action 2, released in October 2021, has a unique position on the market thanks to its modular design and low weight. Make sure to check my review in case you missed it and want to know more about the camera. The good news is that DJI does not neglect the older-generation camera and still keeps improving it with firmware updates. Recently, the Action 2 received a firmware update that brings support for gyroscopic data for postproduction stabilization. Let’s take a look at the details.

DJI Action 2 gyro data firmware update

The new free firmware version v01.04.05.10 brings support for gyro data which means appropriate software will be able to see the data embedded in the video files and stabilize the footage accordingly. The in-camera stabilization must be turned off in order for this to work.

While the Rocksteady electronic stabilization in the camera is not bad, the gyro-based stabilization in postproduction can deliver better results most of the time. This is useful for FPV pilots for instance as the Action 2 is quite popular here thanks to its form factor and low weight.

The full list of new features looks like this:

  • Video will include gyro data in the following camera settings:
    • Stabilization: off
    • FOV: Wide
    • Resolution: 4K (4:3) 24/25/30/48/50/60fps or 4K (16:9) 100/120fps.
  • Improved the compatibility with Android 13.0.

DJI recommends Gyroflow version v1.4.2 or above for gyro-based video stabilization for the Action 2 files. If you are not familiar with Gyroflow, it is an open-source stabilization software.

The firmware update can be loaded into the camera via the DJI Mimo app. DJI notes that if the update fails, you will need to restart DJI Action 2 and DJI Mimo and retry.

Price and availability

DJI Action 2 currently sells for $299 as a power combo or $399 with the touchscreen display module. The firmware update is free of charge and it is available via the DJI Mimo app.

Do you have experience shooting with the DJI Action 2? How do you like the image from the camera? Do you use gyro-based postproduction stabilization? Let us know in the comments section underneath the article.
