Lens adapter manufacturer Metabones surprised and intrigued us when they introduced the “Speedbooster” adapter that boosts your lenses speed by 1 f-stop and widens the field of view. What a perfect device that would solve some of the major problems of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. If only the camera were shipping yet.
Well the EF version of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera (BMCC) is here, but due to flange distances the Speedbooster will not mount an EF lens to your EF BMCC (yet). The announcement of the Speedbooster for MFT (Micro-Four-Thirds) and the Blackmagic Cinema Camera MFT sparked new hopes for an ingenious package.
The Speedbooster that would allow you to use EF lenses on an MFT Cinema Camera is in the works and is said to arrive later this year.
But Philip Bloom got hold of a Speedbooster that would mount Contax Yashica lenses (very good Zeiss glass. Recommended: 28mm 2.8, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4, 135mm 2.8) and Leica R glass.
He tested both adapters on exactly what difference they would make mounted to a Blackmagic Cinema Camera with passive MFT mount (see video above).
The Speedbooster MFT for Leica R or for Contax / Yashica is available at the Metabones website and costs $399: LINK
