Flanders Scientific 31.5" XMP310 Reference Monitor Announced

Flanders Scientific XMP310 is a 31.5″ reference monitor for HDR and SDR workflows. It features a QD-OLED panel with a UHD resolution and a peak brightness of 1000 nits. The XMP310 sports 12 BNC connectors for input/output, 3-pin XLR for DC power, and a fanless aluminum chassis design. It is available now for an introductory price of $9,995.

Flanders Scientific Inc (FSI) is a US-based company producing high-end monitors for quite a long time and is well-known in the post-production world. We wrote about their BM241 monitor back in 2021, for instance. Their latest HDR and SDR reference monitor uses the QD-OLED technology and features a 31.5” UHD panel. Let’s take a look at it.

FSI XMP series with QD-OLED panels

With the XMP series of monitors, FSI for the first time brought QD-OLED (quantum-dot OLED) technology into the field of professional reference monitors. The advantage of the technology, as FSI puts it, is that it is truly RGB additive for white, so it avoids color volume limitations of other OLED panels.

Furthermore, the accurate per-pixel level luminance control of QD-OLED results in true black levels with minimized bright objection or motion artifact limitations (when compared with FALD – full array local dimming LCDs). Flanders scientific claims this improves highlight detail by reducing backlight zone flaring, and minimizes halation and color shifts.

Last year, the company was awarded the HPA Engineering Excellence award for their 55” XMP550 monitor, and shortly after FSI also announced a larger 65” XMP650 model. Now, a much smaller sibling comes in the form of XMP310.

It is a 31.5″ UHD resolution (3840×2160) HDR and SDR reference monitor with 1000 nits peak luminance, 1.5 million:1 contrast, and a wide color gamut. The QD-OLED (quantum-dot OLED) panel offers 1,073 Billion Colors (10-bit color depth).

When it comes to input/output connections, the XMP310 offers a total of 12 BNC connectors – four 12G-SDI inputs, four 12G-SDI clean loop outputs, and four 6G-SDI processed loop outputs. The monitor supports a wide variety of video signals from SMPTE-296M 720p up to 12-bit 4:4:4 DCI 4K.

The color space selection includes:

  • SMPTE C
  • EBU
  • REC709
  • DCI-P3
  • Rec2020 (covers around 90% of Rec2020 color gamut)
  • Custom

The XMP310 features a fanless design and is passively cooled with a graphite heat sink and its aluminum frame chassis. It offers a variety of assist features such as waveform, vector scope, LUM coloring (false color or grayscale), marker overlays, and more. The monitor weighs 19.2 lbs (8.7 Kg) with the feet attached. It can be powered either via a 100-240V AC adapter or a 24V DC 3-pin XLR connector.

Auto calibration

As FSI claims, all their monitors come pre-calibrated from the factory, but the XMP310 also features an accurate volumetric Auto Calibration feature so customers can recalibrate the display over time.

Simply plug a supported probe directly into the monitor and the AutoCal routine will profile the monitor and use volumetric data to accurately target a wide variety of available color management selections. 3D and 1D LUTs are calculated and saved on the fly as color management selections on the monitor are made. FSI claims it is a simple and unified calibration process without requiring a computer.

Additionally, the XMP310 is also compatible with popular third-party calibration solutions from Calman and ColourSpace (custom 3D+1D LUT-based calibration with any program capable of saving into FSI’s calibration LUT formats).
