Filter specialist Freewell is back again on Indiegogo with a campaign for the Magnetic Filter System K2. It comes with screw-on base rings in different sizes for different lens diameters, magnetic VND filters (CPL, ND32/PL, GND, ND), and slide-in and rotatable effect filters like gradient, glow mist, snow mist, and streak. The starter set for “super early birds” starts at $349,99.

Magnetic filter systems are becoming more and more popular and we just reviewed Velium MagRota Filter System at the end of last year. Make sure to check that out if you are not familiar with the concept of magnetic filters. Freewell introduced the first magnetic filter system, the Magnetic Quick-Swap Filter System already back in September 2019, as well as the very interesting Magnetic VND Filter Kit in June 2021. Now they are back and claiming they have developed the last filter kit you will ever need. Let’s take a closer look!

Freewell Magnetic Filter System K2

The K2 filter system consists of screw-on base filter holder rings, that you only have to screw onto your lens once, afterwards, the filters snap on magnetically. The system includes the K2 Island Slot, a gradient tool integrated for slide-in effect filters like gradient, glow mist, snow mist, and streak. The effect filters slide in from the top and can be rotated in any direction.

True Color VND

Like other manufacturers, Freewell claims that their variable ND filters are very color-accurate. However, VND filters are always critical to color shifts and therefore we should take the marketing announcements with a grain of salt. To truly know, we would have to test how accurate the VND filters are in the real world.

Futureproof

Different lenses for different cameras result in varying filter diameters and this is where it gets really expensive. The filter system has adaptable filter sizes that fit 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, and 82mm included in every filter set. Additional adapters are also available for 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, and 62mm lenses. Unfortunately, you cannot use a lens hood with this system because it is designed to be a one-size-fits-all solution. So, whenever you buy a new lens, you won’t need to purchase new filters since you would already have them on hand, but no lens hood is a big disadvantage in daily use.
