Freewell Magnetic iPhone SSD Storage Solution Announced – Supports All M.2 SSDs

September 24th, 2024 Jump to Comment Section 4

At IBC 2024, we spoke with Harry Gwalani from Freewell about their new magnetic SSD storage solution designed for mobile phone recording. This customizable rig is very versatile, supporting all sizes of M.2 SSDs, so let’s have a look.

Freewell is a brand specializing in filmmaking gear for cameras, smartphones, and drones. They are known for their filter systems like the Magnetic Filter System K2, the filter series for the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and Mini 4 Pro, and more.

The overheating problem

In discussing their new Freewell SSD storage solution, Harry highlighted a common issue with the many compact solutions that are on the market: they often require small SSDs that can cause overheating. Freewell’s rig addresses this by allowing users to mount any of the four sizes of M.2 SSDs, giving more flexibility so users aren’t stuck with smaller options that often overheat. In addition, users can mount a microphone directly onto the unit, and fast charging at 60 watts is also possible.

A lot of options

First, the unit is sold without SSDs, which helps keep the cost down. Harry mentioned a few package options depending on user needs. The first includes a grip, an SSD Hub, and a Bluetooth remote. However, there is also the option to buy just the Hub, which can be mounted directly on the phone or even onto a rig. The Hub itself is versatile, compatible with almost any camera via USB-C, according to the company, and it’s not restricted to iPhones—it works with any smartphone. It also boasts 10GB transfer speeds.

A modular system

We commented on how we appreciated the modularity of the system, and the idea of allowing users to pick and choose components based on their specific needs—whether it’s the grip, SSD case, or just the Hub. Harry added that the unit is also fully compatible with the rest of Freewell’s ecosystem of lenses and filters, all available on their website. Additionally, its magnetic design makes it even more versatile, allowing the phone to be positioned either vertically or horizontally.

Pricing and availability

Although pricing is yet to be finalized, Freewell plans to price the Hub alone at under $100, while the full package—featuring the Hub, SSD storage solution, and Bluetooth remote—should come in under $200. The product is expected to be available by the end of the year. For more information, please visit the Freewell website here.
