We last visited FUJIFILM’S Taiwa factory around three years ago. Since then, the GFX 100 camera got smaller (watch our documentary on how it was made by clicking for part ONE here and part TWO here), the MK lenses production hall got smaller (see how the MK lenses are made here) and former Taiwa’s factory CEO, Shigeki Chiba-san has since been replaced by Kazuhiro Anzai-san. But, needless to write, the two-and-a-half-hours long ride from FUJIFILM’s headquarters in Omiya all the way to Sendai station and catching a taxi to the factory, stayed the same…
Another thing that hasn’t changed is the warm hospitality of the employees managing and working at the factory. It really doesn’t matter how many times I’ll have the opportunity to visit this place, I will always be amazed by the Japanese kindness and how they welcome outsiders like myself.
Like in previous years, Takuya-san, the man behind many things at FUJIFILM, was the one to show me around the factory. Also, he was visiting the factory for the first time since the pandemic, and thinking of it, it might be possible, we were even the very first visitors altogether.
Seeing firsthand how a lens is made is ALWAYS thrilling and the FUJIFILM XF 150-600mm f/5.6-8 R LM OIS WR was no exception. The dedication and level of concentration these people have while assembling this 480 parts lens is nothing short of amazing!
