iFootage Komodo K5S Fluid Head Introduced – Stronger and Smoother

iFootage recently introduced the successor to their lightweight Komodo K5 fluid video head: the Komodo K5S. The Komodo K5S has a maximum payload capacity of 5kg/11lbs. Additionally, the fluid head controls’ ergonomics have been improved, and its new internal design should be smoother. So let’s take a closer look at this compact fluid video head!

The iFootage Komodo K5 fluid video head was launched back in 2017. This lightweight and affordable tripod head was mainly designed to be used on top of a monopod, a slider, or for your B-cam static shot. Therefore, the Komodo K5 was the ideal secondary tripod head when you wanted to travel lightweight and didn’t want to spend much money on a head that was not used daily.

After the recent Cobra 3 monopod series launch, iFootage is back with an upgraded version of the Komodo K5: the Komodo K5S.

iFootage Komodo K5S features

The iFootage Komodo K5S is an upgraded version of the original K5 and is slightly heavier than its predecessor at 820g/1.8lbs, but the maximum payload remains the same at 5kg/11lbs.

On top of the head, you’ll still find a Manfrotto 501PL-style quick-release plate. The plate that comes with the head has a two-stage platform: the high part of the quick-release plate attaches to your camera, and the lower part allows some clearance if you use big lenses with small mirrorless cameras.

On the right side of the head, you’ll find the quick-release locking knob and a rosette to attach the pan bar. Also, the base of the Komodo K5S still features a 3/8″-16 mounting point to attach it to a monopod, tripod legs, slider, etc. So what’s new?

What’s new

First, iFootage increased the Komodo K5S base diameter. Next, the pan bar and the head’s rosettes are now replaceable in case they wear out over time. Finally, the tilt control knob on the left side of the K5S is now more prominent, something that should make operators’ lives easier.

However, most of the changes to the upgraded model were made on the inside, so they’re not directly visible. According to iFootage, they “improved the fluid head design to improve stability and accuracy of movement. The improved damping system ensures that you will have a much smoother camera experience with smooth, fluid shots.”

Pricing and availability

The Komodo K5S is now available for $149, only $10 more than its predecessor.
