Image 2 LUT – Clone Your Favourite Film Look With One Click

Image 2 LUT - Clone Your Favourite Film Look With One Click

Picture Instruments has announced a new piece of software that enables you to quickly clone the look of an image and apply it to any image or video.

Image 2 LUT looks very simple to use. Find a reference image you like, the software will then copy the color and contrast attributes and create a Look that you can apply to your image or generate as a LUT for video.

Image 2 LUT is a piece of stand-alone software, it offers a set of basic slider options to refine the image cloning process.

The above video does a pretty good job of explaining how these features affect your image, but the TLDR version of it is the software looks to isolate skin tones and contrast.

Skin tones both in the reference image and the output image can ‘distract’ the software from developing an accurate cloned look, so the slider features help isolate and customize these.

Exporting JPEG images is easy, but more importantly is how this software works for video.

You can export in a variety of LUT formats that can easily be read by NLE software like Premiere Pro CC where you simply load the LUT profile in using the Lumetri Panel.

Like any piece of shortcut style software, this will not be perfect, it won’t convert day for night or make your terrible exposed, out of focus shot a Hollywood masterpiece.

I can see this being a great tool for Directors putting together reference stills; it a very quick and easy way to get images in the same ballpark as one another.

There’s a host of reference images preloaded to get you started. Adding your own is simple, just screenshot existing images, website and films.

The Cost for Image 2 LUT will be $47 plus tax.

What do you think about this type of color grading. Can you see yourself coloring your project this way? Let us know in the comment section below.
