American manufacturer K-Tek has just released a new compact and affordable boompole: the K-Tek KC108 Essential. This entry-level boompole is uncabled, made from a proprietary composite material, and extends from 74.9 to 275cm/29.5 to 108in. So let’s take a closer look at this $200 boompole!
When it comes to high-quality boompoles made without compromises, K-Tek is probably one of the foremost brands among boom operators and sound crews worldwide. Indeed, the American manufacturer has been making boompoles for more than 20 years, and their quality products built them a solid reputation on film sets across the globe.
After the high-end K-Tek “Mighty Boom” series made of lightweight graphite material released in 2021, K-Tek is back with a more affordable option for sound operators who are starting out: the KC108 Essential.

K-Tek KC108 Essential – features
Unlike other entry-level boompoles on the market, the K-Tek KC108 Essential is made from a proprietary composite material, not metal or aluminum. This composite material keeps the boom relatively lightweight at only 544g/1.2lbs. As a comparison, the RØDE Boompole, which has similar dimensions but is made of aluminum, weighs 940g/2.07 lbs. Anyone who has ever operated a boompole can tell you that every ounce of weight saved here and there can make a significant difference, especially when fully extending the boompole. Your arms will thank you for it.

Talking about dimensions, the KC108 Essential measures 74.9cm/29.5in when collapsed. This 5-section boompole can be extended up to 275cm/108in via the four anodized knurled surface collars.

As opposed to more high-end boompoles, the KC108 Essential comes uncabled. However, there is an opening at the bottom of the boompole. If you contact K-Tek, you can get a custom-made KC108 Essential with a coiled cable inside and a 3-pin XLR connector at the bottom.

Lastly, the top end of the KC108 Essential features a 3/8″-16 top attachment compatible with microphone shock mounts or Rycote-style shields.
