Laowa has just released a new ultra-wide-angle prime lens for Super 35 mirrorless/cinema cameras: the Laowa 7.5mm T2.9 Zero-D S35 Cine. This “zero-distortion” rectilinear glass will be available in Canon RF, Nikon Z, FUJIFILM X, and Sony E-mounts. Let’s take a closer look at it!

Chinese lens manufacturer Laowa is continuously releasing lenses at a very constant pace. Indeed, the company recently expanded its Cine lens lineup for Micro Four Thirds cameras with four lenses, and last month they launched a new L-Mount version of their Laowa 85mm F/5.6 2x ultra macro lens.

Furthermore, Laowa is well-known for its Zero-D ultra-wide-angle lenses that don’t distort your image. The company already had a 9mm T2.9 Zero-D Cine lens that covers Super35 sensors, but they went even wider with the new Laowa 7.5mm T2.9 Zero-D S35 Cine.

Laowa 7.5mm T2.9 Zero-D S35 Cine features

The Laowa 7.5mm T2.9 Zero-D S35 Cine is a pretty compact and lightweight cinema lens that measures 80.7mm/3.17″ for a weight of 610g/21.5oz. Moreover, the lens is available in various lens mounts, including Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z, and FUJIFILM-X-mounts.

This fully-manual lens has a 29mm image circle that perfectly covers Super35 – and smaller – image sensors. According to Laowa, this is the widest rectilinear lens for S35 sensors on the market.

Like most Laowa lenses, this 7.5mm T2.9 is mainly made of solid aluminum. It has 0.8 mod gears on the aperture and focus rings.

As I already mentioned, this ultra-wide-angle lens is part of the “Zero-D” lineup, which stands for Zero Distortion. In short, lines will remain straight, with no “fisheye” effect. This kind of rectilinear lens is advantageous when capturing architectural, aerial, and indoor footage.

Lens design

The lens design of the 7.5mm T2.9 Zero-D S35 Cine consists of 16 elements in 10 groups with two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) and two aspherical glasses. The aperture diaphragm features seven aperture blades.

One thing worth noticing is that the lens’s front element is not a dome, which means you can attach 77mm filters to it. The outside diameter is 80mm, so you can use a standard clamp-on matte box.

Last but not least, the minimum focus distance is 25cm/9.84″; that’s relatively close for an ultra-wide-angle prime lens.

The Laowa 7.5mm T2.9 Zero-D S35 Cine is available now for $699. It comes in a nice little weatherproof hard case.
