Laowa Probe Zoom Lenses Introduced – 15-35mm T12 / 15-24mm T8 with Interchangeable Barrel Options
Laowa introduced two new probe zoom lenses at NAB 2025: the 15-35mm T12 and the 15-24mm T8. Johnnie spoke with Laowa’s Sean Ruggeri about these latest models, which follow Laowa’s earlier probe lenses that became common in tabletop and commercial productions. The new lenses have a complete optical redesign with added zoom capability and offer several interchangeable barrel options.
Laowa’s original probe lenses were introduced six or seven years ago and quickly gained traction, especially in the tabletop commercial space. They’re now a common item in rental houses and still see regular use in a range of productions. The new zoom versions were recently announced and then shown publicly for the first time at NAB 2025.

Two zoom options for the Laowa Probe Zoom lenses
There are two zoom options: the 15–35mm T12 and the 15–24mm T8. Each supports four interchangeable barrel configurations – a straight view, a 90-degree, periscope, and a 35-degree angle. Sean pointed out that the periscope offers a downward-facing setup and is often used for tabletop or ground-level shots – configurations that open up creative framing options, from sliding between objects to extreme close-ups at eye level with insects or small products.
The shafts can be swapped using a bayonet-style mount, and users can share barrels between the two lenses. This makes it possible to choose one or the other lens based on either focal range or T-stop, depending on the needs of the shoot.
The Art & Science of Lenses

Company and legacy
While talking with Sean, Johnnie asked about Laowa, saying that it is a relatively small company, but it has developed a reputation for pushing into niche areas. Sean noted that the team seems to genuinely love the challenge of bringing unusual lenses to life.

Regarding these new lenses, Sean says that many users still rely on the original T14 probe lenses, which remain in circulation, especially in rental houses. While those older models continue to serve many productions well, the new versions represent a complete optical redesign, with improvements in sharpness and color performance in addition to faster T-stops.
Price and availability
Both lenses will support multiple mounts, and Laowa plans to make all configurations available individually. At the time of the interview, other configurations and packaging details were still being decided. The 15–24mm T8 is expected to cost $3,500, while the 15–35mm T12 will come in at $4,000.
