Leica and Panasonic Sign an Agreement to Jointly Develop L² Technology

Leica and Panasonic have recently signed a new comprehensive business alliance that will result in the development of the new L² Technology. According to the two companies, this will bring several technological advancements for both Leica and LUMIX imaging systems.

You can say, Leica and Panasonic have been friends for a long time. Indeed, the two companies started working together on developing innovative lens and camera technology back in the early 2000s, right at the beginning of the digital era.

Their mutual esteem seems to keep passing the test of time. In 2018, along with SIGMA, they gave birth to the “L-mount Alliance”. Joined by Leitz towards the end of 2021, this partnership made the Leica L-Mount system available to the other manufacturers of the pact. A few days ago, Leica and Panasonic signed a strategic comprehensive collaboration agreement to make their cooperation even more rock-solid. Let’s take a look!

Leica + Panasonic LUMIX = L² Technology

Recently, Matthias Harsch, CEO at Leica Camera AG, and Yosuke Yamane, Executive Vice President Director of Panasonic’s Imaging Business Unit, shaked hands over an agreement that will engage the two companies in the development of new imaging technologies and solutions.

These will mainly revolve around cameras, lenses, and pieces of software. The results of this team effort will take the name of L² Technology, where “L squared” stands for Leica and LUMIX. This also means that both Leica and Panasonic LUMIX products will exploit the benefits of this technological advancement.

Leica has legendary experience in developing both optical and imaging systems. On the other hand, Panasonic has built a very strong video ecosystem over the last few years, especially with both their mirrorless and box-style camera lineups. Going forward, the two companies are fully committed to collectively investing in this project, by making their specific know-how available to create “ a new imaging world”.
