Leica and Atomos partnered up to bring ProRes RAW recording to the Leica SL2-S when using the NINJA V/V+ recorders. Thanks to upcoming firmware updates, the camera will be able to record 12-bit linear ProRes RAW at up to 4K 60fps over HDMI. The updates for both the SL2-S and the NINJA V/V+ will be available at the beginning of May 2022.
Apparently, it is ProRes RAW day today! After Nikon’s announcement of firmware 2.0 bringing internal ProRes RAW recording to the Z 9 soon, we now got news that another camera, the Leica SL2-S, will support the same RAW video format in the near future.
This new recording mode will be enabled by connecting the SL2-S to an Atomos NINJA V/V+ recorder via HDMI. The Leica SL2-S joins other 40+ cameras in the Atomos ProRes RAW ecosystem. Let’s take a closer look.

Leica SL2-S + NINJA V/V+: ProRes RAW up to 4K60
First announced in December 2020, the Leica SL2-S brings on the legacy of the original SL2. This capable full-frame camera features a stabilized 24.6MP sensor and, thanks to firmware update v2.0, can internally record H.265 10-bit videos in 4K at up to 60fps. If you want to learn more about this camera system, I highly recommend taking a look at Johnnie’s review and Gunther’s Lab Test.
Fundamentals of Directing

This new Leica/Atomos collaboration is now greatly expanding the capabilities of the camera with the introduction of RAW video recording. This will be supported over HDMI in the form of 12-bit linear ProRes RAW at up to 4K 60fps. Considering the size of the SL2-S and the NINJA V/V+, this combination will result in a compact RAW-capable setup.

Price and availability
The Leica SL2-S and NINJA V/V+ firmware updates that will enable this new recording mode will be available as a free download towards the beginning of May 2022. For future updates, please keep an eye on Leica and Atomos’ websites.
