September 14th, 2024 Jump to Comment Section

MID49 accessories for the Canon EOS C400 are coming soon, but during IBC 2024, co-founder Ryan Schorman also revealed a new accessory kit for the newly announced EOS C80. He also shared some interesting info and insights about MID49 and the industry as a whole. An avid engineer, Schorman shared some of his perspectives on the R&D process and MID49’s key takeaways and advantages when creating a new product.

Ryan and Elisabeth Schorman co-founded MID49, but it’s not their first rodeo. The couple is also behind Wooden Camera, which they sold several years ago. After two years dedicated to a non-profit project, they decided it was time to return. Equipped with heaps of hard-earned knowledge and experience from the Wooden Camera days, they got some of the old gang back together and started with MID49. But now, let’s take a look at their new EOS C400 and EOS C80 accessories!

The Canon EOS C400 is a rather compact cine camera. With the obvious advantages compactness brings, it means the camera body can get pretty crowded once you connect all the bits and bobs required for full-on film production. MID49 offers a couple of kit options as well as independent accessories to deal with these challenges.

Along with the usual slew of ARRI Rosette points, NATO rails, and attachment points, the EOS C400 cage includes a side breakout box unit. This can independently attach to the Rosette mount on the right-hand side (where the grip goes). The breakout unit converts the camera’s DIN timecode and Genlock ports to standard BNC connectors and the mini XLR to standard-size XLRs. It does so with the minimal tax on the camera’s dimensions, and if you really need the smallest possible configuration, you can just remove it.

The top plate includes a railed handle so you can adjust it according to the center of gravity. There’s also a cutout for Canon’s smart hot shoe connection. A power distribution module is also available, based on either a V-mount or a Gold Mount, and attaches to the back of the camera body.

The unique design of the Canon C80 dictates a different approach. MID49 designed an upper cage with base and top plates. An additional right-hand bracket is also available. Like the EOS C400 cage, this one also leaves a smart hot shoe opening. An audio breakout unit adapts the dual mini XLRs to full-size XLRs, with the added bonus of being able to place them in a more convenient spot. Additional ports, rosettes, rods, and rails are also available for you to mix and match.

Price and availability

As with all modular products, the price range can vary significantly. A MID49’s Mid Kit for Canon EOS C400 tops out at $1,500, and the simpler EOS C80 Mid Kit will go for less than $1,000. All MID49 accessories for Canon EOS C400 and EOS C80 are available to order, with the EOS C400 products already in stock and the EOS C80 products shipping in about two weeks (before the camera body).
