Middle Things APC-R Mini - Ultra Compact Gimbal Controller for Live Production Introduced

The French company Middle Things has introduced the APC-R Mini. This specialized control unit fits in the palm of your hand and is designed to convert compatible DJI 3-axis gimbals into fully functional PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) heads that can be controlled remotely. Sounds like it could be an interesting solution for live video productions, so let’s have a look!

Middle Things is focused on bringing innovative products to the live video production market, like their ATEM pocket controller for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, which we wrote about back in 2020. Their APC-R control, released three years ago, allowed users to combine a DJI gimbal and a Blackmagic camera in a PTZ head. Now, although the features and internal electronics are the same as the original, the hardware has been completely revamped into a tiny unit combining the APC-R, the APC-R gimbal adapter, and the Middle Tally all into one unit – the APC-R Mini.

The following video gives a thorough walk-through of various ways to pair and use the APC-R Mini:

Connecting the APC-R Mini

The Mini connects directly to compatible DJI gimbals with two screws and is powered directly from the RSA accessory port on the gimbal. The unit is then connected to LAN Ethernet (recommended) or Wi-Fi.

The Mini can be used for compact or studio setups. Similar to controlling a standard PTZ camera, you can manage up to 8 DJI gimbals remotely from a single laptop using long-distance Ethernet connectivity, utilizing the Middle Remote or a USB gaming controller through the Middle Control software. Once connected, the built-in Tally will display whether you’re in Preview or On-Air mode.

The following gimbals are compatible with the APC-R Mini: DJI RS2, DJI RS3 Pro, DJI RS4, and DJI RS4 Pro. Another interesting feature is the ability to set the Mini up to track a subject in autopilot mode – this requires the DJI RavenEye system.

Controlling the Mini

Multiple control options are available for the Mini, including USB gaming joysticks, Middle Remote, BitFocus Companion, or TCP Access with the SDK/API.

If you don’t have a motorized zoom lens, the DJI Focus Motor can be controlled remotely through the Middle Control App or ATEM Software Control.

Blackmagic Camera control with the Mini

Because of its WiFi and Bluetooth chip, the Mini can be used as a remote controller for any Blackmagic Design camera with a Bluetooth chip. This means you can control the shutter, iris, WB, Gain, and Focus in addition to the gimbal’s Pan, Tilt, Roll, Speed or Zoom motor.

With an ATEM switcher, Middle Control desktop software can be connected to the ATEM to control more advanced camera settings such as Luma, Gamma, Life, Contrast, Saturation, and Sharpening.

Please note that although the APC-R Mini is only available for use with Blackmagic cameras presently, the company plans to add Sony cameras in the future.

Price and availability

The APC-R Mini is available now directly on the Middle Things website and is priced at €390. You can also find authorized resellers here.
