Nikon Plans to Introduce 50+ Z Mount Lenses by 2025

Nikon has recently presented its Medium-Term Management Plan which includes the release of 50+ Z mount lenses by 2025. Moreover, the company’s business strategy also involves the strengthening of video-centric tools on future camera models. Let’s take a closer look. 

These are extremely prolific days for the Japanese tech giant. Indeed, the company has just announced the details of the upcoming Z 9 firmware update that will bring internal N-RAW and ProRes RAW recording to the camera.

Moreover, in its recently-released Medium-Term Management Plan, Nikon expressed the intention of having 50+ Z mount lenses released by 2025, as well as the will to reinforce focus on video products.

50+ Nikon Z mount lenses released by 2025 

Last month, Canon announced its intention to add 32 new RF lenses to its lineup by 2025. Apparently, Nikon doesn’t want to be left behind. In fact, during a recent business event, the company unveiled its Medium-Term Management Plan, declaring the goal of having 50+ lenses in the Z mount offering by 2025.

Given its short focal flange distance of 16 mm, the Nikon Z system is one the best (if not the best) mirrorless lens mounts on the market in my opinion. Indeed, this design offers engineers the ability to develop extremely fast glass with a very compact form factor. Nikon’s Z mount lens lineup is already quite extensive, ranging from the 14-24mm f/2.8 up to the recently-released 800mm f/6.3 VR S super telephoto lens.

Stronger video functions in future products

Back in 2015, I purchased a Nikon D750 as my first hybrid video/stills camera. To tell the truth, its video specs were quite disappointing and so were those of most Nikon cameras in the following years. Today, it’s crazy to think that the Z 9 is considered one of the best mirrorless cameras for video shooters.

This change in perception testifies how much attention this company is dedicating to video-centric features. Nikon’s intention was also recently confirmed in the Imaging Products: Business Strategy section of its Medium-Term Management Plan. Among their goals, we read:

“Appeal to video creators by strengthening video functions”.

Lately, Nikon further expressed interest towards the video market with the announcement of the MC-N10 remote grip for Z mount mirrorless cameras, which clearly is an accessory aimed at filmmakers.
