Nikon Z 8 Lens Mount and Strap Eyelet Issues will be Fixed for Free

Some Nikon Z 8 users have reported lens mount and strap eyelet issues, which will be fixed by the manufacturer free of charge, even if your camera is no longer under warranty. So let’s look at these issues and find out if your camera is affected!

The Nikon Z 8 was announced in May 2023, and the least we can say is that it has incredible video features for such a compact camera body. The Z 8 can record RAW video internally up to 8.3K/60p in 12-bit N-RAW, ProRes RAW HQ, 10-bit ProRes 422HQ, and H.265. If you drop down the resolution to 4K without any crop of the full-frame image sensor, you can record footage up to 120p. In a nutshell, we can say that the Z 8 has similar video recording capabilities as the flagship Nikon Z 9 camera, but in a much smaller form factor.

The camera has been shipping for a couple of months. However, some users started reporting issues related to the lens mount and strap eyelet. Nikon recently published a technical service advisories document and will have your back.

According to Nikon, some “users of the Z 8 camera have informed us that in some rare cases, a lens cannot be mounted on the camera because the lens cannot be rotated to the locked position.”

Regarding the strap eyelet, the company also mentions that “the metal camera strap eyelets in the camera may become loose or separate from the camera body. Based on our investigation into the matter, it has become clear that this issue may occur if a Z 8 camera strap eyelet is subjected to conditions such as a strong impact or continuous heavy stress.” The company further notes, that both sides of the strap eyelet are subject to this issue.

Nikon investigated the issues and identified a range of Z 8 cameras affected by these issues. To know if your camera is as well, you can enter your camera’s serial number on this page. If your camera is listed, Nikon will repair your camera free of charge, including shipping/return costs, even if your warranty is over.

Since some camera cages for the Nikon Z 8 – such as the one from SmallRig – use the strap eyelet as an attachment point, I strongly advise you to check if your camera is on Nikon’s list.

Did you already receive your Nikon Z 8 camera? If so, how do you like it so far? Are you concerned about the lens mount and strap eyelet issue? Don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments below!
