Panasonic AF100 And The Varavon Viewfinder.

November 5th, 2010 Jump to Comment Section

Although it is not a HDSLR, it does fall into the large sensor cinema category. The Panasonic AF100 looks like it will be a very good tool for cinema work.Used in conjunction with the Hot Rod Cameras micro four-thirds to PL mount adapter . It will take PL mount lenses and that opens the door for a bevy of options. The AF100 has all the standard features that a HD camcorder should have with a relatively decent price point. I do not think it is going to kill HDSLR’s any time soon.

**We tried to shoot a comparison test with the Canon 5D mark II and were denied. We were told that the Codec on the AF100 was still in the process of completion and was not available for the test.

We tried our ass off to get a good shot of the Varavon viewfinder. It was just too hard at the expo. However, it has some killer attributes for both stills and motion. The viewfinder is rock solid but a little bulky for my taste. It does work very well in bright light conditions as both a hood and viewfinder for the LCD on the back of the camera. The top viewfinder image is smallish but will let you see the image in tight situations. The Varavon is a cool innovation on an existing product for sure.
