Panasonic LUMIX S1 and S5 – External BRAW Recording with Upcoming FW Update

Panasonic LUMIX S1 and S5 – External BRAW Recording with Upcoming FW Update

Panasonic will release new firmware updates for the LUMIX S1 (v2.1), LUMIX S5 (v2.3), and LUMIX S1R (v1.9) on July 12, 2021. The S1 and S5 will get compatibility with the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G recorders in order to record 12-bit BRAW externally up to 5.9K30 or 4K60 (cropped). The prerequisite for the S1 is the installed DMW-SFU2 upgrade. The S1 and S1R get new photo styles – L.ClassicNeo and L.Monochrome S.

Back in March 2021, Panasonic announced significant firmware updates for all its LUMIX S cameras and the BGH1. Panasonic’s video flagship, LUMIX S1H, received the firmware v2.3 on March 31, 2021. Among other improvements, the camera received the ability to record Blackmagic RAW externally over HDMI when connected to the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G recorder.

Its more affordable sibling, the LUMIX S1, got the firmware v2.0 in April 2021 which unlocked numerous internal recording modes as well as external raw output over HDMI for ProRes RAW with the Atomos Ninja V. It was always very likely that Panasonic will enable other LUMIX S cameras to record Blackmagic RAW with the Video Assist 12G, but it was not clear when that was going to happen. Now we know: Panasonic announced that both LUMIX S1 and LUMIX S5 will get the external Blackmagic RAW recording capability with the upcoming firmware updates on July 12, 2021. Let’s take a look at the details.

Panasonic LUMIX S1 and S5 firmware updates

Panasonic LUMIX DC-S1 will get the firmware version 2.1 and the DC-S5 gets the firmware version 2.3. After updating, both cameras will be compatible with the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G recorders, which will save the raw video output from HDMI as 12-bit Blackmagic RAW video files. This will work in the same resolutions and frame rates as with the S1H:

  • Full-frame – 5.9K (5888 x 3312) at 29.97p/25p/23.98p (16:9)
  • Super35 – 4K (4128 x 2176) at 59.94p/50p/29.97p/25p/23.98p (17:9)
  • Super35 Anamorphic – 3.5K (3536 x 2656) at 50p/29.97p/25p/23.98p (4:3)

Please keep in mind, that for the LUMIX S1 this new feature is available only with the Upgrade Software Key DMW-SFU2. Users who already have the DMW-SFU2 key, do not have to purchase it again. The camera only needs to be upgraded with the key once.

The LUMIX S1 also gets the new L.ClassicNeo and L.Monochrome S color profiles (photo styles) with the new firmware v2.1. Additionally, Panasonic also releases new firmware v1.9 for the LUMIX S1R camera which adds these new L.ClassicNeo and L.Monochrome S color profiles (photo styles) to the camera.

Price and availability

These new firmware updates are free of charge (provided you already upgraded the LUMIX S1 with the DMW-SFU2 key). As always, they can be downloaded from the Panasonic LUMIX Support Webpage after the official release on July 12, 2021, at 9:00 pm EDT. As an owner of the LUMIX S1 and the Video Assist 12G 5″ and as a person who does 100% of post-production work in DaVinci Resolve, I much appreciate this new update.
