Panasonic LUMIX S9 Firmware Ver 1.1 Temporarily Suspended

Panasonic LUMIX S9, among the world’s most compact full-frame cameras, gets a new firmware update. With the update of Ver 1.1, Panasonic has included some significant upgrades, making their most affordable full framer even more capable. The LUMIX S9 lets go of the arbitrary record limit and gets new, user-adjustable frame markers, two new tracking modes, and improved mobile app support. When combined, these new capabilities enhance the camera’s professional potential.

NOTICE – Firmware Ver 1.1 is temporarily suspended due to potential issues Panasonic has noticed. Additionally, firmware updates via LUMIX Lab and LUMIX Sync have also been suspended. If you’ve already updated your camera and general operation seems fine you shouldn’t do anything, for now just leave it on. Panasonic is resolving the issue and should relaunch it again shortly. We’ll keep you posted.

Firmware updates are an important part of our industry. They allow for relatively swift bug fixes as well as influential upgrades. The Panasonic LUMIX S9 gets the latter, upgrading the camera’s abilities. The new features included in this firmware update, Ver 1.1, elevate the camera’s abilities toward a more professional, user-defined workflow. Let’s dive in and see what they do and how it will work for us videographers, filmmakers, and content creators.

Recording limit

The LUMIX S9 boasts some impressive features that are quite rare for other cameras in its price range or target market. 4K 50/60P and 6K 25/30P open gate usually find their place in much more expensive cameras. However, a price was paid in the form of a rather restrictive recording limit. With 10min for 6K and 15min for 4K, the camera left something to be desired. Luckily, Panasonic addressed this issue, allowing us to turn this limitation on and off. As with all firmware updates, Ver 1.1 can’t address hardware issues, so don’t expect it to overcome the thermal challenges of a high-performance sensor and high bitrates in a tight, tiny body. Overheating may still halt shooting, but now it’s user-selectable rather than arbitrary.

Frame markers

Gone are the days when the 16:9 ratio dominated the scene. Our tumultuous days dictate a multitude of formats. Be it vertical 9:16, square, or panoramic, the S9 has you covered. The camera’s 6K open gate capabilities take most of the heavy lifting in that regard, but the new firmware update now allows for three user-customizable frame markers, applied simultaneously. A simple menu selection and a touch on the screen will let you set your markers where you want them, making the shooting easier and more precise.

Tracking and app control

The LUMIX S9 also gains two additional tracking modes for airplanes and trains. Current modes – Human, Animal, Car, and Motorcycle are improved. App control will now allow for camera-selected image transfer. Shutter remote control is also available, as well as a Record start/stop. Remote shooting, including a remote live view, is also available.

Is the LUMIX S9 a pro camera now?

Well, that mostly depends on your definition of a “pro camera.” Still, this firmware update broadens the S9’s envelope, allowing for more customization, better video workflow, and better control over the camera. Since the physical features remain unchanged, some will only go as far as physics allows. If you are in the market for a hybrid workhorse, I’d personally go for the S5 II or S5 II X.

Price and availability

Panasonic LUMIX S9 firmware update Ver 1.1 is currently suspended but should become available for free download shortly. Panasonic also adds Mint Green and Sakura colors to the US market, as well as an 18-40mm kit priced at $1799.

Will this update make you consider the LUMIX S9 for your professional work, or will you go with a different model? Let us know in the comments.
