Revar Cine PA Tears Filter Explained – A Unique 4×5.65 Diffusion Filter
Filter specialist Revar Cine recently introduced its latest diffusion filter for use in a matte box: The Revar Cine PA Tears diffusion filter comes in 4×5.65 and in one strength only. We had the opportunity to talk to Ryan Avery about it at the BSC Expo in London.
When the Revar Cine PA Tears titled filter hit the market earlier this year and a lot of people thought the choice of name was a bit weak. But according to Ryan Avery, it’s really all about creative naming and not the usual “Pro Mist” in 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, and 3 strengths.
Just like the already available Scarf Dust diffusion filter, the new PA Tears is available in one size and one strength only. So if you like it, that’s good, but if you don’t, you will have to look somewhere else.

The new PA Tears could be considered the silver version of the more golden Scarf Dust filter. It is only available in 4×5.65 format in one strength (“We can only make so many PAs cry”).
The Secrets of Optics
A filter this special is available in the only size any true filmmaker uses; 4×5.65.

The filter softens the contrast and makes the highlights bloom in a rather pleasant way. If you want to learn more about how these filters are made, watch the video below (it’s hilarious, of course, and goes well with the naming, although I’m not entirely sold on the joke):
Pricing
The PA Tears filter sells for $399, but for a limited time, you can get one (or a Scarf Dust, if you want things to look more… golden) for $269 (saving you $130). Both filters are available in 4×5.65 size. Each filter comes with a protective pouch.
