The new SHAPE LWAKS is a clamp-on matte box featuring a single filter tray compatible with 4×5.65” and 4×4” filters. Its front-opening mechanism allows for a one-hand filter change. The matte box can also assume a swing-away configuration or be mounted on rods via two optional kits. This new product is now available for purchase for $329/€315.84.

Back in September, accessories manufacturer SHAPE released two matte box models: the SHAPE AKSCL and AKSWA. These clip-on and swing-away matte boxes support two 4×5.65” filter trays, one of which is rotatable. You can also find a review of the swing-away version in this article.

Recently, the company introduced a more compact, single filter tray solution: the SHAPE LWAKS. So let’s take a closer look at this new lightweight entry.

SHAPE LWAKS matte box: single filter tray design

This new SHAPE accessory looks very similar to the dual filter tray models, but with a simplified design. It consists of a silicon shade box that comes with a CNC-machined aluminum frame.

Its compact design features a single filter tray that can host a 4.5.65” or 4×4” filter. Although this solution helps keep weight down (0.52kg), in my opinion, it’s a little limiting considering other products in this price range. For example, the Tilta Mirage offers greater flexibility and a more complete set of features.

The SHAPE LWAKS clamps onto the lens and is compatible with glasses ranging from 67 to 124mm in diameter via a series of adaptor rings. Four threaded aluminum rings (87-82mm / 87-77mm / 87-72 mm / 87-67 mm) and a 124-87mm adapter are included in the kit.

Five additional clamp-on rings are available to purchase separately, including:

• 124-114 mm
• 124-104 mm
• 124-100 mm
• 124-95 mm

The single filter tray can be easily accessed by releasing a red safety pin on the side. The front opening mechanism offers the ability to perform a filter change with just one hand. Moreover, two stops at the bottom of the aluminum frame prevent accidental damage to the filter.

Optional configurations

Along with the clamp-on configuration, an optional rod clamp adapter is available to purchase separately. Its height is adjustable to easily adapt to a wide variety of setups.

A swing-away feature can also be added by screwing an optional kit to the main frame. Finally, a carbon top flag (not included) can be attached to the top of the matte box to protect your lens from undesired flares.

Price and availability

This new SHAPE LWAKS Single Tray 4×5.65” Matte Box is now available for order from the manufacturer’s website. The official retail price of the matte box is $329/€315.84, while the additional kit of 4 clamp-on adapter rings will cost you $99/€92.
