SIGMA 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports Lens Released

SIGMA 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports Lens Released

The SIGMA 150-600 f/5-6.3 has been a widely popular super-telephoto lens, but up to now, it has only been natively compatible with DSLR cameras. By introducing the new SIGMA 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports for E-Mount and L-Mount, the company has made this lens available to the mirrorless world.

SIGMA Sports lineup includes a series of telephoto and super-telephoto zoom lenses with great optical performance. Given the wide zoom range and fast autofocus, these lenses are particularly suitable for sports and wildlife photographers and filmmakers.

Firstly announced in 2014, the SIGMA 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports comes with three mount options: Canon EF, Nikon F, and SIGMA SA. However, with the whole world switching to mirrorless cameras, it’s time for SIGMA to introduce a couple of new options.

The new SIGMA 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG DN OS is the first-ever Sports line lens for mirrorless cameras. In fact, it is compatible with E-Mount and L-Mount cameras. Let’s take a closer look.

SIGMA 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG DN OS: overview

The new SIGMA 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG DN OS shares the same characteristics that made the DSLR version so popular: a wide zoom range with a large aperture, great optical performances, fast and precise autofocus system, high-degree of customization via assignable switches, and excellent build quality.

The abbreviations in the name of the new model inform us that the lens is specifically designed for full-frame (DG) mirrorless (DN) cameras. Two mount options are available: Sony E-Mount and Leica L-Mount. Moreover, the lens features optical image stabilization (OS).

If you can’t get enough out of the 600mm focal length, it’s good to know that the L-Mount version is compatible with the SIGMA 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. In this scenario, the autofocus system still works up to 1200mm.

SIGMA 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG DN OS: optical construction

The optical design includes 25 elements divided into 15 groups. Among these, two Special Low Dispersion (SLP) and four Low Dispersion (LP) elements should increase optical performance and prevent aberrations.

Moreover, this design should minimize ghosting and flare. As sensors become more and more packed with pixels, this lens should still provide razor-sharp images even when working with high-resolution cameras.

According to SIGMA, the Optical Stabilizer (OS) provides about 4 stops of image stabilization. This is great when shooting handheld with longer shutter speeds. Furthermore, the Optical Stabilizer and Custom Mode switches on the lens will allow the user to change the stabilization settings.

Fast, high-precision AF

The SIGMA 150-600 f/5-6.3 DG DN OS features an autofocus system equipped with a high-precision magnetic sensor. Fast and quiet autofocus is required for sports and wildlife applications when tracking moving objects is critical.

In order to speed up autofocus performance, the user can rely on the Focus Limiter switch to reduce the focus range. Three different focus range options are available. On the L-Mount version, a custom focusing distance limit can be set using the Sigma USB Dock.

Build quality

The lens is built using aluminum and Thermally Stable Composite (TSC). These materials provide a robust, compact, and lightweight design. For example, the L-Mount version weighs 2100g and it’s 26,36cm long. That is 760g lighter and 2,66cm shorter than its DSLR counterpart.

The whole lens is dust and splash-resistant, while the front element is treated with a water and oil-repellent coating. Moreover, the use of TSC should reduce the impact of temperature variations on the optical design.

A new Zoom Torque switch has been added to allow users to customize the resistance of the zoom ring and lock it at the wide end.

When shooting on extremely long focal lengths, the use of a tripod or monopod can make life much easier. The lens can be attached to an Arca Swiss type clamp via a magnesium tripod socket.
