SIGMA 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary for L-Mount and E-Mount Full Frame Cameras Released

SIGMA has released a new ultra-wide zoom lens for Panasonic L-Mount and Sony E-Mount full-frame cameras: the SIGMA 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN. This bright f/2.8 constant aperture lens is part of the company’s Contemporary lineup of lenses, which means it is relatively compact and lightweight. So let’s take a closer look at it!

Japanese lens manufacturer SIGMA has been relatively quiet this year, with the launch of “only” X-Mount prime lenses and the 20mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary prime lens. The Contemporary lineup consists of various prime and zoom photo lenses designed for Panasonic L-Mount and Sony E-Mount mirrorless cameras. In addition, two kinds of lenses are available in the Contemporary line: DC lenses that cover APS-C sensors and DG lenses that cover full-frame sensors.

However, the wait is over, and the team at SIGMA has unveiled what they’ve been working on. Photographers and filmmakers will now have an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens option with the new SIGMA 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN.

SIGMA 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN features

The new SIGMA 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN is a 450g/0.99lbs ultra-wide zoom lens made of Thermally Stable Composite and metal/plastic parts. Also, this is a very compact zoom lens at only 10cm/4in long.

Furthermore, the lens has inner zoom/focus systems, which means it doesn’t expand or retract as you zoom in and out. So for gimbal users, you won’t need to rebalance as you change the focal length. Moreover, the lens mount is dust/splash resistant.

On the inside, you’ll also find a stepping motor for fast and accurate high-speed autofocus performances. In addition, the autofocus system supports DMF and AF+MF autofocus modes. On the 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN, there’s a focus mode switch to quickly turn off the lens’ focus motor.

Lens design

The optical design of this lens consists of 16 elements in 11 groups, with five FLD and four aspherical lens elements to minimize chromatic aberrations. In terms of coating, SIGMA opted for a Super Multi-Layer technology that reduces lens flares and ghosting, so you should be able to preserve high contrast in your image even in backlit conditions.

This new 16-28mm has a front filter thread of 72mm to attach filters, and the aperture diaphragm consists of 9 rounded aperture blades for smooth bokeh results. Lastly, the minimum focusing distance is 25cm/9.9in.

Price and availability

The official retail price of the new SIGMA 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN is $899. The lens will be available later this month. In the box you’ll find the lens, front and back caps, and a petal-type lens hood.

As a direct comparison, that’s the same price of the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD, while the Tokina opera 16-28mm f/2.8 FF (only available in Canon EF and Nikon F mounts) retails for $699.00.
