SIGMA 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens Released

SIGMA 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens is a new fast allrounder zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras with Sony E-mount and L-mount. It features a weather-sealed body, weight below 1kg/2.2 lb, 82mm front filter thread, a minimum focusing distance of 40cm, and a video-oriented design with minimized focus breathing, aperture ring, and more.

Only a few years ago, it was quite difficult to get a full-frame lens with a fast constant aperture of at least f/2.8 combined with a long zoom range. Thanks to technological advancements, we now have a few lenses with these specs. I am talking about the Tamron and Samyang with the 35-150mm f/2-2.8 or the Canon 24-105mm f/2.8. Today, SIGMA announced a new, very interesting, fast all-rounder lens as well. Let’s take a quick look at the new SIGMA 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art lens.

This lens covers full-frame sensors, and it will be available for Sony E-mount and L-mount cameras. Optically, the lens features FLD, SLD, and five aspherical elements, the largest with a diameter of 66.4mm. This design allows the lens to stay relatively short and lightweight. The good news is that SIGMA managed to keep the lens weight under 1kg/2.2 lbs. This also means there is no optical stabilization. You have to rely on the camera’s IBIS.

The minimum focusing distance throughout the whole zoom range is 40cm/15.7 in. from the sensor plane. This results in a magnification of 1:3.1 at 105mm. The lens has an 82mm front filter thread. SIGMA claims the focus breathing was reduced to a minimum. This should help when shooting video with the lens as the scene will not change much when the focus moves. The aperture ring features a de-click switch as well as two AFL buttons.

There is also a zoom lock switch that holds the zoom ring in place at the wide end. This prevents “zoom creeping”—accidentally extending (zooming in) the lens under its own weight. The lock can be quickly released by unlocking the switch or rotating the zoom ring.

The lens has sealed housing that prevents moisture and dust from entering. The lens barrel includes plastic and magnesium parts. The front element also has a water and oil-repellent coating that helps keep it clean in harsh shooting conditions.
