SIGMA has just released a new mid-telephoto I series prime lens for L-Mount and Sony E-Mount camera systems: the SIGMA 90mm F/2.8 DG DN. This compact-sized lens is entirely built out of metal, it features ultra-fast autofocus performance and a lens design built from the ground up for ultra-sharp image performances. So let’s take a closer look at it!
Along with the SIGMA 24mm F/2 DG DN, the company also released another Contemporary Premium Compact Prime lens, which is also part of the I series lineup: the 90mm F/2.8 DG DN. This lens is primarily aimed at content creators, who love shooting portraits, wedding photographers/filmmakers, or to really isolate the subject from its background thanks to the lens’ small minimum focusing distance.
SIGMA 90mm F/2.8 DG DN features
This new SIGMA 90mm F/2.8 DG DN has a lot of similarities with other lenses in the same I series lineup: it is entirely made of metal (inside and outside), it doesn’t expand when you change focus, it has dedicated focus and aperture rings, it is available for either L-Mount or Sony E-Mount cameras, and it covers full-frame sensors.
It is a mid-telephoto prime lens that features a quiet and high-speed AF drive system. You’ll find a focus-mode switch on the lens, and the lens supports DMF and AF+MF (for Sony E-Mount only). In addition, the stepper motor is compatible with high-speed autofocus.
The Art & Science of Lenses
The 90mm F/2.8 DG DN is a super lightweight piece of glass at only 295g/10.4oz, with a length of only 59.7mm for a diameter of 64mm. It won’t take up much space inside your camera bag, and you won’t be tired from carrying it on your camera all day. I think street photographers might love it for quick portraits!
Like every SIGMA I series lens, this 90mm F/2.8 DG DN comes standard with a magnetic metal lens cap. So, if you have other SIGMA I series lenses, you can clip this magnetic metal lens cap to the optional lens cap holder (codename CH-11).

The lens also comes with a removable lens hood that perfectly matches the design of the lens.

Lens design
The lens design of the lens consists of 11 elements in 10 groups, with five SLD glass elements to correct axial chromatic aberration that cannot be in-camera corrected. Also, there is one aspherical lens element to help with image distortion. Finally, all-glass elements feature a super multi-layer coating.
The aperture diaphragm consists of nine rounded aperture blades. The minimum focus distance is only 50cm/19.7in and has a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5. This 90mm F/2.8 lens has a 55mm front filter thread.
Price and availability
The lens is available now for $639.00.
