SIRUI just became the ninth company to join the L-Mount Alliance, officially adopting Leica’s standardized lens mount for mirrorless cameras. This is big news for photographers and filmmakers since it means more lens options, more compatibility, and a little less worrying about whether your gear will play nice together. The whole idea behind the L-Mount Alliance is to create a flexible, open system where cameras and lenses from different brands work seamlessly.
This makes the L-Mount system even more exciting, especially with cameras like Blackmagic’s PYXIS 6K offering new possibilities for indie filmmakers. With more lenses becoming available, it is getting even harder to ignore the flexibility and creative freedom this system provides.
What’s the L-Mount Alliance all about?
The L-Mount Alliance kicked off in 2018 when Leica announced opening the mount to SIGMA, and Panasonic. Since then, more companies have joined, including Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH, DJI, ASTRODESIGN, SAMYANG Optics, Blackmagic Design, and now SIRUI. The goal is simple: give people more choices without forcing them into a single brand’s ecosystem.
The L-Mount itself is pretty versatile. It has a 51.6mm diameter and a short 20mm flange distance, which makes it great for both full-frame and APS-C cameras. Leica built it to be tough, too, using stainless steel bayonets with four flanges for a secure fit. There’s also an electronic contact strip, so lenses and cameras can communicate properly and even get firmware updates.
The Art & Science of Lenses

Leica’s role in all of this
Leica developed the L-Mount to create a high-end, future-proof standard for mirrorless cameras. They’ve been making cameras and lenses for over 150 years, so they know what they’re doing. The company is all about precision and quality, and their leadership in the alliance helps set the bar pretty high.

“The L-Mount Alliance stands for openness, innovation, and the highest quality in photography,” said Valentino Di Leonardo, Managing Expert Technology & Licensing at Leica. He also pointed out that bringing in SIRUI adds fresh ideas to the mix, making the whole system even better for photographers and filmmakers.
SIRUI’s place in the industry
SIRUI has been making a name for itself with solid, affordable lenses for both photographers and filmmakers. The company is based in China but has branches in the U.S., Germany, and Japan, with a presence in over 60 countries. (See how the SIRUI lenses are being made in this factory tour video that we made). One thing that sets them apart is they handle everything in-house, from research to production to sales, which helps keep quality high and costs down.

They’ve been on a roll with some exciting lens releases. The SIRUI VP-1 series is a set of full-frame T1.4 cinema lenses with user-interchangeable mounts. We covered it in more detail here: SIRUI VP-1 Announced. They also launched the 40mm T1.8 1.33x S35 autofocus anamorphic, which offers “cinematic visuals” at a price point that doesn’t require selling a kidney. According to SIRUI’s founder and CEO, Li Jie, joining the L-Mount Alliance is a huge step forward. “SIRUI is set to significantly enhance the L-Mount Alliance lens ecosystem,” Jie said. “Our aim is to introduce a broader range of outstanding, high-value L-mount lenses to the market.”

Why this matters for filmmakers and photographers
Adding SIRUI to the L-Mount Alliance is a win for anyone who wants more lens options. Instead of being locked into a single system, users can mix and match gear from different brands without needing adapters or dealing with compatibility headaches. More competition also means more innovation and potentially lower prices.
For video shooters, this is especially exciting. SIRUI has been a go-to for budget-friendly cinema and anamorphic lenses, so their involvement in the alliance means we’ll likely see more high-quality glass built specifically for L-Mount cameras.
The bigger picture
The L-Mount Alliance keeps growing, and that’s good news for everyone. When brands work together instead of forcing customers into closed systems, it leads to better options and a more future-proof investment. Whether you’re a filmmaker, a photographer, or just someone who loves having choices, this is a step in the right direction.
With SIRUI now in the mix, the L-Mount system is looking more versatile than ever. More lenses, more flexibility, and more reasons to keep an eye on what’s coming next.
